Safari Overview

An exciting journey throughout the Antarctic Peninsula, exploring incredible landscapes and watching for endearing wildlife, including Gentoo penguins, humpback whales, minke whales and much more. There are seven species of penguin and at least three species of whales that you could encounter throughout your journey so keep your eyes peeled at all times for glimpses of wildlife. When wildlife is spotted from the bridge, your captain will endeavour to maneouvre towards the sightings wherever possible, or you may head out on a Zodiac excursion for better photographic opportunities.

Your exact expedition route may vary depending on local ice and weather conditions, the availability of landing sites and opportunities to see wildlife. The final itinerary will be determined by the Expedition Leader on board. Flexibility is paramount for expedition cruises.

Day by day

Day 1

Ushuaia

In the afternoon you will embark your ship in the town of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego - the southernmost city in the world. Located at the Beagle Channel, this is one of the most famed gateways to Antarctica. From here, you will set sail through the scenic waterway en route to the seventh continent.

Days 2-3

At Sea

Over the next two days you will venture through the Drake Passage, cross the Antarctic Convergence and then arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. Close to the South Shetland Islands you will be able to spot your first icebergs as well as a wide range of birdlife including albatross, petrels and Cape Pigeons.

Days 4-7

Antarctica

Over the next few days there are a variety of places you may have the opportunity to visit for fantastic wildlife sightings. These include Cuverville Island which is home to a large colony of Gentoo Penguins, Danco Island where chinstrap penguins can be seen waddling along the ice and Neko Harbour where you may actually be able to step foot on the Great White Continent. You may be able to take a Zodiac cruise between icebergs and fjords if you visit Paradise Bay. When sailing through the Neumayer Channel you may get the opportunity to visit the British research station and the post office on Gouldier Island to send a postcard from the ends of the Earth. As you reach the Lemaire Channel and Petermann Island, look out for Adelie penguins and humpback, minke and fin whales.

Days 8-9

At Sea

You will now make your way north again where you will be followed by a large range of seabirds whilst crossing the Drake Passage. After a week of Antarctic photography you'll be skilled at capturing these birds in flight.

Day 10

Ushuaia

This morning you will have the tough task of bidding farewell to your fellow passengers and expedition team before disembarkation at Ushuaia. Not only will you have thousands of photographs and memories from your trip but you are likely to have made some new firm friends too.
