A Last Minute Trip To Svalbard
I love travelling and had been thinking about seeing the Polar Bears in the Arctic for a while, and made some enquiries thinking I would go next year. I called Natural World Safaris and spoke to the lovely Gemma, who answered all my questions, and I was so excited about the sound of it all, I decided to book my trip to Svalbard the very next day, which meant I had little over a month before I was due to go!

Staring at the dark hole in the bright snow, you wait.
Why Antarctica for Photography
The rugged wilderness landscape is unlike anything you will experience anywhere else in the world. Sprawling icescapes seem to stretch for miles and seeing tabular icebergs towering above you will leave you astounded. Although the wildlife in Antarctica is truly unhabituated, the penguins appear completely unfazed by human presence which enables photographers close-up encounters without disturbing the peace.

Raoul Du Toit
Since 1986, Raoul du Toit has been instrumental in coordinating rhino conservation initiatives in Zimbabwe, working tirelessly through the turmoil and turbulence of Robert Mugabe’s dictatorship. Today he serves as the Africa Rhino Program Coordinator for the International Rhino Foundation, as well as Director of the Lowveld Rhino Trust, which focuses on protecting rhino populations in southern Zimbabwe. Working particularly in the Lowveld's Save and Bubye Valleys, the Trust aims to tackle the area's immediate conservation needs by monitoring, managing and protecting the area's black and white rhinos, as well as raisising awareness in local communities of the plight facing the endangered mammal.
Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka
Even before she reached her teens, the precocious young student established a wildlife club at her school in Kampala, and organised trips to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Her dedication to the natural world only grew as the years went by, culminating in a scholarship to the Royal Veterinary College in London. Between 1996 and 2000, she set up the first Veterinary Unit at the Uganda Wildlife Authority, serving as the country’s first full-time veterinarian. Today Kalema-Zikusoka holds a Masters in Veterinary Science, a Masters in Global Business and Sustainability, and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management – all of which have prepared her well for her role as Founder and CEO of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH).
Charlotte Uhlenbroek
Between the ages of five and fourteen she lived in Kathmandu, Nepal. Her love of animals developed, she even wandered the streets trying to rescue stray dogs (she has since set up a charity to support them). Travelling to Tanzania as a teenager, she discovered the African national parks and their wildlife, which would become an integral influence on her life. Aged sixteen Charlotte visited world famous conservationist Jane Goodall’s chimpanzee research centre in Gombe Stream National Park, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania.
The Great Sardine Run
A shimmer of silver under the surface and we’re off. Moving as one, millions of sardines make their way up the coast in seething masses known to be over 7 kilometres in length and 30 metres deep. You might be thinking ‘sardines? Really? But this really is one of the earth’s most magnificent wildlife feats, a truly spectacular sight that few will ever see with their own eyes.
Jan Ramer
Dr. Jan served as the Gorilla Doctors’ Regional Manager at the renowned Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project in Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 2009 to 2011. She returned to lead the in-country veterinary team in December 2013.
