Days 2-3

Andasibe National Park

Enjoy exploring Andasibe/Perinet National Park with your local wildlife guide. A montane forest park offering the chance to spot a variety of lemurs, reptiles and birds. One of its most famous inhabitants is the Indri; this is the largest of all lemurs with a teddy bear like appearance. You hear the Indri before you see them and it is best to leave early morning to be near the Indri when they make their distinctive morning group communication calls. Other lemurs which can be seen here are the red-bellied lemur, brown lemur, lesser bamboo lemur, with nocturnal lemurs - brown mouse lemur, greater dwarf lemur, Eastern woolly lemur, sportive lemur, aye-aye.

Day 5

Antananarivo - Ifotaka Forest

You will take the ten minute journey to the airport for your flight south to Fort Dauphin. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and driven north to the Ifotaka Community Forest. Upon arrival, after settling into your tent, a barbeque lunch awaits! You’ll then head out on a walk with your guide to the spiny forest. Look out for lemurs (Verraux's sifaka, white-foot sportive, grey mouse and grey brown mouse are all found here) as well as the ancestral tombs that fill the forests. Head back to camp for drinks along the river, followed by dinner.

Overnight: Mandrare River Camp B, L, D

Day 6

Ifotaka Community Forest

Today you will explore the gallery forests, to the south of the camp, home to ring tailed lemurs and verreaux sifakas. These deciduous forests are full of flora and fauna which your guide will point out. In the afternoon, enjoy sundowners at their version of ‘Avenue des Baobabs’. With 99 baobabs, a mountain as a backdrop and no one else in sight, this really is a magical place and a great way to end your day.

Overnight: Mandrare River Camp B, L, D

Day 7

Ifotaka Community Forest

Spend another day exploring the forests in search of the vast array of lemurs, birds and reptiles. If your stay coincides with a Tuesday or a Saturday you may enjoy visiting the local market which is the largest in the area and traders come from far and wide to sell their produce (and swap gossip!). There is also a chance to enjoy a night walk to spot the nocturnal mouse lemurs, the sleeping birds, chameleons, owls and sportive lemurs.

Overnight: Mandrare River Camp B, L, D

Day 8

Ifotaka Forest - Manafiafy Beach

After breakfast, you’ll bid farewell to your hosts and head back to Fort Dauphin for lunch. You’ll then continue up the coast to the remote Manafiaty Beach where your rainforest lodge awaits! Also known as Sainte Luce, this area has empty beaches stretching for miles on end, mangrove swamps and forest covered mountains. It truly is paradise! We recommend taking a dip in the Indian Ocean followed by a sundowner!

Overnight: Manafiafy Beach & Rainforest Lodge B, L, D

Days 9-11

Manafiafy Beach

Enjoy three days lazing in this beautiful area. Should you be able to tear yourself away from your hammock, you can explore the mangroves, beaches and forests around this area by foot or by boat. Visit local villages, walk miles on empty beaches, enjoy picnics on nearby islands or visit the forests. The area is home to brown lemurs, southern woolly lemurs, sportif lemurs, thick tailed dwarf lemurs and brown mouse lemurs as well as birds, reptiles and more. In whale season (July – September) spot whales from the lookout tower and should you see them, find the boat driver and head off to the ocean to get a closer look. This is all about getting back to nature, away from modern life.

Overnight: Manafiafy Beach & Rainforest Lodge B, L, D

Day 12

Manafiafy Beach

If you can possibly bear it, you’ll leave this paradise for the journey back to Antananarivo and beyond. This entails a drive to Fort Dauphin and a flight back to Antananarivo airport. Say goodbye to the Red Island full of memories and adventures and hope to return soon!
