A bit about Sophie

Yorkshire born and bred I have always loved the outdoors and exploring. My Africa journey started with a trip to South Africa, originally booked for three weeks, it very quickly became three months and an overland trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. My adventure ended with a safari in the South Luangwa in Zambia and a career change when I got offered a job as a camp manager! I have been incredibly fortunate to manage camps in the South Luangwa in Zambia, The Serengeti, and Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. Being on the ground in Africa taught me so much about the safari industry and of course I had a lot of fun exploring!

Since returning to the UK I have kept my passion for Africa alive, working as a Destination Specialist, a Sales Representative, and Destination Management Consultant, courteously increasing my knowledge and exploring new destinations.

Travel is a key part of my life, I am always looking to book my next adventure, be it to the remote African bush or a city break in Europe, I am never happier than when I am travelling.

Q & A With Sophie

Favourite destination and animal: My favourite travel destination is Zambia and my favourite animal is the Wild Dog.
What is your first travel-related memory? Family holidays in Cornwall - the long drive down from Yorkshire followed by a week of family fun!
What is your most memorable wildlife encounter? Tracking lions on a walking safari in the North Luangwa, we had been following the track for four hours and were about to head back to camp for lunch when we found the pride of eight lions. When they realised we were there, the big male stood up and stared at us letting out a massive roar, the sound went right through me - it was an amazing feeling.
If you could do just one NWS safari, which one would it be and why? Zakouma National Park in Chad, I love to explore the remote wilderness.
What do you like doing outside of NWS? I love to walk and explore everywhere and anywhere.

Why do you travel? To open my mind to new and wonderful experiences, meet new people and learn new things.

What do you love most about Africa? The wilderness. I am never happier than when I am sitting outside my tent watching the sunrise with my morning coffee somewhere in the African wilderness.

If you were going on a round-the-world trip and could invite anyone from history, living or dead, who would they be and why? My nephew and niece. it would be so amazing to share an epic adventure with them.

What's the farthest away from "civilisation" that you've been? The farthest away from civilisation I have explored would be Lango Bai in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, Congo Basin.

Aside from travelling, how do you maintain your connection to the natural world? Walking, I am never happier than when I am wandering through some part of the natural world, be it Yorkshire or Zambia, I only feel like I know a place once I have explored it on foot.

What is your favourite souvenir from your travels? A little wooden hippo I got at the Kazungula border crossing, where Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana meet.

How many countries and continents have you visited? Africa - Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Lesotho. Australasia – Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Cook Islands. Asia – Thailand, Hong Kong. Europe – France, Spain, Italy, Malta, Ireland.
