M/V Polar Pioneer, Antarctica

M/V Polar Pioneer, Antarctica

The Polar Pioneer is no stranger to the icy waters of the Southern Ocean, with a long track record of exploring the remote polar regions. The ship is a true expedition vessel with a tough design; large enough to reach remote destinations, but small enough to access places bigger ships simply can’t get to. Sporting the highest ice class - 1ASuper - she has no problem venturing into ice with her strong ice-strengthened hull.

In 2022 she is being reborn and benefitting from an extensive refit and all cabins have been refreshed in a functional Scandinavian style. She offers a large deck space with raised areas making her perfect for photography, and features a large updated passenger saloon with bar, and an onboard sauna to warm up in after a day in the cold.

With only 53 passengers on-board you’ll be able to maximise your time on shore; she has five zodiacs for shore landings, allowing all guests to shore together.

M/V Polar Pioneer Details

STYLE

The Polar Pioneer is one of 10 Akademik Shuleykin-class Russian ships built in the1980s in Finland as an ice strengthened research vessel - perfect for navigation in polar regions with heavy sea ice - for the Soviet Union’s oceanographic research purposes. What makes MV Polar Pioneer so special is that she is a true expedition vessel capable of accessing places larger ships simply can’t get to, but still big enough to make guests feel comfortable during the voyage. A relaxed and informal ship, with cabins for up to 53 guests at a time.

SETTING

The ship can be found cruising through the waters of Antarctica during the season.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES

The M/V Polar Pioneer will be back and ready for new adventures from Summer 2022 after a refurbishment and overhaul. Her drydock refurbishment includes an upgrade of the cabins, the main lounge/bar area, and overhaul of bathroom systems.
All cabins have been refreshed in a functional Scandinavian style, with special attention to small details like extra hooks and optimised storage ideal for polar expedition cruising. With five different cabin types to choose from; from triple to the captain’s suite, there is a variety to choose from when it comes to space and price, and all cabins have a porthole or window.
On-board you will find a large deck space with raised areas making her perfect for photography. She features a large updated passenger saloon with bar, and an onboard sauna to warm up in after a day in the cold.

DINING

The dining room offers buffet breakfast and lunch, and table-service dinner. Hot drinks and soft drinks are also included.

ACTIVITIES

As with all expeditions to Antarctica, excursions are weather- and wildlife-dependent. The team on board will aim to have you out exploring by zodiac or on land at least twice a day. Antarctica is home to stunning scenery and incredible wildlife but there is history here too, and historical landings sometimes play a part in your itinerary.
