Delve into the high Arctic in search of wild polar bears in a range of Arctic environments. Explore the Svalbard Archipelago with the best guides, as well as award-winning photographer, David Yarrow. Your time aboard will be about getting the best wildlife encounters possible, through great knowledge and real flexibility. David will be on hand giving seminars and presentations, helping you capture photos that will do your once-in-a-lifetime Arctic safari the justice that it deserves. Travelling early in the season, you will experience Svalbard away from the crowds and increase your chances of witnessing polar bear cubs.

On previous departures we have had polar bears right next to the ship, a curious bear attempting to break a harem of walrus, a bear with a recent kill, and sightings of a mother bear with her cubs.

Day by day

Day 1

25 April 2019: Arrive Longyearbyen

The start of your photography adventure! Today is the day you board your expedition ship, and home for the next eight days, the M/S Freya. Meet your new travel companions, settle in to your cabin, and enjoy dinner before setting sail towards the icy north, through spectacular ice fjords. Make sure you get plenty of rest, the real adventure starts tomorrow…

Days 2-7

26 April - 2 May 2019: Exploring Svalbard

We won’t give you an exact itinerary, as it will depend on the weather, ice conditions, and the location of wildlife. However, we can promise you this: we will make every effort to ensure you get out on the Zodiacs as much as possible for the best wildlife encounters and the most memorable experience in the Arctic you can imagine. Expect stunning ice fjords, towering cliffs populated with thousands of birds and enormous glaciers crashing into the sea. It’s not just landscapes here, the wildlife is prolific. You’ll scour for polar bears, hopefully encountering them in the pack ice, or with a kill. Walrus bask on floating ice floes, and Arctic fox can often be seen roaming the shores, as well as Svalbard reindeer. We’ll throw in a few surprises along the way too… Expert photographer, David Yarrow, will be on board. He’ll guide you through taking photos in the Arctic conditions. A series of seminars on board will ensure you get the most from your Arctic safari, and get the best photos possible with your equipment.

3 May 2019: Depart Longyearbyen

Today, you'll transfer to the airport for your journey home. You could always book some time in a hotel to take more time to explore Longyearbyen, and learn the wonders of living in the Arctic.

This is a set departure on the beautiful M/S Freya, leaving on just one date: April 25 - May 3, 2019. It is led by some of the best guides in the Arctic, as well as world-renowned photographer David Yarrow. The emphasis of this safari is wildlife and photography. There is no set itinerary, so we can be free to explore the best locations in search of wildlife and see the best landscapes the Arctic has to offer!
