Svalbard In Focus

5 Days Of Arctic Discovery

Set sail on the R/V Kinfish for a remarkable long weekend Arctic expedition, immersing yourself in adventures among Svalbard's breathtaking fjords. Glide past glittering snowy mountains, towering glaciers and icebergs with the unique spring awakening of the Arctic unfolding around you. Witness the transformation of the Arctic fox’s coat from white to brown, reindeer preparing for calving season and the beginnings of returning migratory birds to Svalbard skies. Perhaps you’ll even catch a glimpse of a polar bear as it uses the sea-ice as a platform for hunting. All of this as the sun returns to nearly 24-hour daylight, albeit hovering briefly on the horizon for twilight, casting its gentle light across the icy landscape.

This journey is perfect for travellers seeking a short yet immersive Arctic experience without the commitment of a long expedition. Ideal for Arctic newcomers, the intimate R/V Kinfish accommodates just 12 passengers, offering a cosy, personalized atmosphere and access to secluded fjords and coves. With incredible opportunities to observe wildlife like walruses, seals, and reindeer against the backdrop of pristine icy landscapes, this adventure balances exploration and comfort. With pre-night accommodations in Oslo, transfers, and guided activities included, planning is effortless—letting you focus on the wonders of this extraordinary region.

Day 3 - 5 Exploration of Svalbard

Spend the next three days on your expedition vessel and out in the zodiacs discovering the wonders of the arctic. Your expert guides and crew will impart their knowledge of these otherworldly landscapes, the history, and of course the wildlife found in this fragile environment. Spend time cruising through the ice, watching out for polar bears as they hunt for seals, which often hitch rides on the passing ice floes; look out for colonies of walrus basking on the beaches in the Arctic sun; and see gigantic glaciers crashing into the icy seas. The exact itinerary will depend upon the weather conditions, the density of the pack ice in the north, and wildlife opportunities. The long days offer photographers spectacular light conditions combined with the dramatic landscapes; you can capture truly extraordinary images of your adventure.

Day 6 Departure

Your ship is likely to arrive into the harbour the night before you disembark to ensure you are in Longyearbyen ready for your onward flights. Enjoy the Captain’s farewell dinner and your final night together. Wake for an early breakfast and then head back to the airport. You will be transferred either directly to the airport for your onward flights home, or back to the centre of town depending on the time of your departure

R/V Kinfish

Built in 1958, the R/V Kinfish has recently been transformed from a Norwegian research vessel to a classic passenger ship, ready to explore the icy waters of the Spitsbergen archipelago. The bridge has been fitted out with advanced safety equipment, allowing the R/V Kinfish to safely navigate the calm Svalbard waters. With room on board for just 12 passengers, the ship has an intimate atmosphere, and her small size allows her to access some of the smaller fjords and coves along the coastline. Kinfish has an expansive deck space spread across multiple levels, two spacious lounges, and a fantastic presentation room. Read more about R/V Kinfish.
