Settle into camp and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea before setting out on your first game drive in Liuwa Plains National Park. Accompanied by your guide, you may have the opportunity to leave your vehicle and explore the park on foot. The birdlife in Liuwa is extraordinary, and at certain times of year the plains will be occupied by hundreds of pelicans, wattled or crowned cranes, geese and smaller waterbirds. Spend hours with a camera or binoculars watching the multitudes of species come to drink at one of the many watering holes.

Overnight: King Lewanika Lodge (B, L, D)

Day 6

Liuwa Plains

Leave camp early today with members of the Zambian Carnivore Program (ZCP), a non-profit research team dedicated to conserving large carnivore species and the ecosystems in which they reside. Spend the morning with the team, tracking some of the large carnivore species which reside in the park, including lion, cheetah and hyena, and learning about the behaviour of individual animals within the prides and packs of the Plains. Arrive back at camp in time for lunch. After lunch you will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the ZCP team about the trends and patterns of behaviour of many of the animal species within Liuwa Plain and understand more about the precious recovering ecosystem of the Park. Afterwards, rest and soak up the magical atmosphere of one of the most remarkable vistas in Zambia before afternoon tea and your evening game drive. End the day with sundowners by one of the many hyena dens in the Park. The hyenas are incredibly inquisitive and interested in people; some will even leave the safety of the pack and den to wander closer and observe humans!
