Blending African charm with contemporary chic, everything at Royal Chundu reflects luxury without the ostentation. Royal Chundu's design has been executed in a way that complements the Zambezi, and with the river as the lodge's centrepiece, you’ll never lose your sense of place during your stay here in this beautiful corner of Zambia.
As the only lodge along the Upper Zambezi that doesn’t share its 15km of private waterways with other operators, Royal Chundu offers unparalleled privacy for guests seeking a relaxing stay on this marvellous river. The villas at River Lodge are set along the riverbank, each one looking out onto the Zambezi and the Zimbabwean savannah beyond. Island Lodge is found on Katombora Island within the river itself, an even more intimate setting.
Accommodation & Facilities
The 14 thatched-roof villas at Royal Chundu are artfully decorated with the hues and patterns of Zambia, each furnishing carefully chosen to reflect the surrounding landscape and exude a sense of peace and tranquillity. Each villa comes with an en-suite bathroom as well as its own private deck overlooking the Zambezi, perfect for taking in the rising and setting of the sun. At Island Lodge you’ll find a lounge, fireplace, rim-flow swimming pool and both indoor and outdoor dining facilities. The larger River Lodge contains a library, fireplace, three lounges, three dining venues, rim-flow swimming pool, wine cellar and gift boutique.
The gourmet cuisine on offer at Royal Chundu wouldn’t look out of place in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Each meal is prepared with fresh produce picked from the lodge’s own vegetable garden or procured from farms within a 3km radius of the lodge, and what’s more, all the chefs who will be cooking your food hail from Zambia themselves. Guests can enjoy delicate and intricate dishes like poached seasonal cumquats, berry-smoked quail and freshly caught bream with watermelon and feta salad. Guests can enjoy their meals in the lodge’s main restaurant, on outdoor viewing decks overlooking the Zambezi, in the barbeque boma area, in the privacy of your own villa, out on the river during a private boat cruise, or even amidst a lovingly set picnic on the riverbank complete with Persian carpets, hammocks hung in the trees and a selection of chilled aperitifs.
With Victoria Falls just 30km downstream, Royal Chundu is a fantastic choice for travellers wanting to discover this wonder of the natural world while based in a luxury lodge. There are plenty of other activities on offer as well, however: sunset river cruises, island walks, spa treatments, canoeing excursions, village walks, community tours, fishing trips and birdwatching safaris can all be enjoyed not far from your villa. If your stay falls between the months of June and August, you’re in for an extra treat: the annual parrotfish run - a spectacle found nowhere else in the world - takes over the Zambezi during this time, when millions of the small fish are pulled downstream and caught by local fishermen using traditional handwoven fishing baskets. Guests are free to simply spectate or get in the water and try making a catch themselves!
Although all ages are welcomes at Royal Chundu, families are not able to stay at Island Lodge for safety reasons. Each villa at River Lodge can sleep up to two adults and two children, and a kids’ club operates here to entertain younger guests.
