Safari Overview

We are excited to offer you an extraordinary polar bear adventure – a stay at the Great White Bear Tundra Lodge, situated outside Churchill on the Arctic tundra itself. On this one-of-a-kind polar bear tour, you remain in the polar bear’s natural habitat to experience surprising comfort, incredible wildlife viewing and sunsets across the snow and ice. This “train” of connected bedrooms, dining room and lounge car is on wheels, allowing it to be stationed for optimal bear viewing each season. There’s no more thorough immersion in the world of the polar bear than on this most unique polar bear to the north.

What makes this trip extraordinary?

  • Stay on the Arctic tundra itself, in the domain of the polar bear.
  • Possibility to see polar bears mothers with cubs, and young adult males play-fighting.
  • Fantastic wildlife spotting opportunities including caribou, Arctic fox, Arctic hare, ptarmigan, and snowy owls.
  • Optional dog-sled excursions and helicopter flights over the tundra.

A photographic safari staying at the very unique Tundra Lodge, in the best place to see Churchill’s polar bears.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Winnipeg

Arrive in Winnipeg and transfer to the historic Fort Garry Hotel, then meet for an orientation dinner this evening.

Overnight: Fort Garry Hotel D

Day 2

Winnipeg - Tundra Lodge

Fly to Churchill and transfer to the Tundra Lodge via your specially designed tundra vehicle, with your first chance to photograph polar bears and other wildlife happening along the way. Here, on the edge of Hudson Bay, where boreal forest meets Arctic tundra, animals abound even in the harsh climate that envelops this environment much of the year.

Overnight: Tundra Lodge B, L, D

Days 3-6

Churchill Tundra

The Tundra Lodge is strategically positioned at the beginning of each season in the best area for polar bear viewing. Every autumn, some 300 polar bears congregate around Churchill, waiting for the ice to solidify on Hudson Bay to begin their winter seal-hunting season. You have ideal early-morning and late-afternoon photo opportunities, with a chance to photograph polar bears at sunrise and sunset. Since the lodge has plenty of common areas – a lounge with sofas and chairs as well as a dining car, each with sliding windows – photographers will have plenty of space to shoot at will.

Overnight: Tundra Lodge B, L, D

Day 7

Churchill - Winnipeg

This morning, it’s time to reluctantly leave the tundra and head back into Churchill for your flight to Winnipeg. Depending on flight schedules, you may have time for some last minute exploration of this frontier town, originally a Northwest Company fur trading post, with a chance to pick up native handcrafts at the Arctic Trading Company. Enjoy a farewell lunch in Churchill or dinner together in Winnipeg.

Overnight: Fort Garry Hotel B, L

Day 8

Depart Winnipeg

After breakfast, say goodbye to Arctic Canada and take your transfer to the airport for your flights home.
