Brazil offers some of South America's most rewarding and exhilarating wildlife encounters. On this safari you will immerse yourself in the fauna and flora of the country on a journey into the wildlife heartlands. Spend days exploring the Pantanal - the largest wetland area in the world - in search of jaguars, soak up the sultry city atmosphere of Manaus in the heart of the Amazon, marvel at the pink river dolphins with the option to swim with them and spend time in the company of the local Tiririca people learning their traditional way of life.
On your arrival into Campo Grande you will be met and transferred about four hours to the lodge. Depending on your time of arrival you may get a chance to go on your first exciting excursion into the Pantanal - the largest wetland in the world and Brazil's incredible wildlife haven. Alternatively you can settle into the atmospheric lodge and its chirrups, chirps and wetland views.
Overnight: Baiazinha Lodge (D)
The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world covering an area of about 195,000 square kilometres over three countries. The area is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles and offers you the best chance of seeing jaguars in the wild. From the lodge you have various activities on offer which you can choose to do over the two full days you have here. The best time to view the wildlife and birds is during the cooler hours of the mornings and afternoons. Activities include photographic safaris in specially adapted vehicles, guided walks, canoeing, night safaris and horseback riding. The night safari gives you the chance to observe the nocturnal creatures. For the adventurous who like something a bit different, book a cattle-driving lesson on the ranch.
Overnight: Baiazinha Lodge (B, L, D)
The Pantanal is divided into the north and south sections and today you transfer back to Campo Grande to fly to the northern part of the wetlands. On your arrival into Cuiaba you will be met and transferred down the Transpantaneira highway to Porto Jofre Hotel. This is a long day but you have the chance to see wildlife as you drive from Cuiaba to the lodge.
Overnight: Hotel Pantanal Norte (B, D)
After an early breakfast you will head to Porte Jofre where you'll board a speedboat to explore the Cuiaba River which is considered the best place to see jaguars. Spend the morning or afternoon out on the river looking for jaguars and other wildlife. Jaguars are often spotted resting along the banks of the rivers in this area. Other wildlife includes giant otters, capybaras, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, marsh deer, caiman and much more. The Pantanal is also a birder’s paradise with over 650 different species including jabiru storks, hyacinth macaws, parrots, toucans and more.
Overnight: Hotel Pantanal Norte (B, L, D)
Today you will leave the Pantanal and fly to Manaus, a city of over a million people situated in the middle of the Amazon jungle. Arriving into the city, marvel at the scenic views as you pass over the vast green wilderness and enter this hot and humid port in the heart of the jungle. After your full day travelling, relax at the hotel or alternatively explore the city of Manaus, which thrived as a result of the 19th century rubber boom, with several grand buildings such as the Opera House.
Overnight: Tropical Manaus (B)
After breakfast you will be met at the hotel and transferred to the Anavilhanas lodge, situated in the heart of the Amazon Jungle opposite the world’s largest river archipelago. The transfer is by road and boat, taking around three and a half hours, arriving in time for lunch. This afternoon you can explore the area around the lodge before heading out on a nocturnal safari through the forest.
Overnight: Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge (B, L, D)
This morning you will head out on a guided walk through the Amazon Rainforest with an experienced local guide. He will teach you more about the wildlife, trees and fruits as well as about jungle survival. The Amazon Jungle and the extensive river systems are home to the rare pink river dolphin and this afternoon you have the chance to go and observe these amazing creatures. There are several habituated dolphins that live in the Rio Negro close to the lodge and you will have the chance to see them close up and, if you are brave enough, you can even swim with them!
Overnight: Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge (B, L, D)
Head out before breakfast to watch the jungle come to life. After this incredible experience you will head back to the lodge for breakfast before heading to the local Tiririca village to learn more about their traditional way of life. During the course of today you will also have the chance to do some piranha fishing, but watch out for their sharp teeth!
