About Camp Kipwe

About Camp Kipwe

Creatively blended in with the huge granite boulders surrounding it, Camp Kipwe embraces igloo style building which look like they have adapted to suit their surroundings, just as the rare desert-adapted flora and fauna has. Four kilometres from its sister, Mowani Mountain Camp, Kipwe is located within the Twyfelfontein Conservancy in Damaraland.

Built using natural materials, such as mopane branches and red basalt stones, there are just 9 bungalows for guests, keeping it intimate and tranquil.

Style

Naturally styled, relaxed accommodation that embraces its unique environment, this is an intimate camp brimming with simple elegance with great attention to detail.

Setting

About 4 kilometres from Mowani Mountain Camp, Kipwe is in the Twyfelfontein area along the D2612. The nearest towns are Uis (130 kilometres to the south) and Khorixa (130 kilometres to the east), and it is close to the Huab River. The nearest airstrip is Twyfelfontein, about 15 kilometres away from the camp.

Accommodation & Facilities

There are 9 bungalows and 1 suite, each made from natural stone in a circular shape and crafted to keep you cool. Inside the décor is simple, natural and organic feeling, with cement and rock walls and rough mopane roofs, with splashes of colour coming from traditional, brightly styled throws and cushions. All rooms have fans, hairdryers, an air horn (in case of emergency) and safes. One room also has a tent pitched behind it that could sleep up to two children. Bathrooms are all open at the top, cleverly kept private by the surrounding boulders. All rooms have a large veranda with outstanding views over Damaraland, though not all of these are completely private.

In the main area, which was redone in 2012 after a fire, there is a large dining area with a balcony, as well as a comfy lounge and a small indoor dining area for the winter. There is also a curio shop and a plunge pool surrounded by sun loungers.

Dining

Meals are at set times, served in the dining area with views of your surroundings, and local produce is used.

Activities

Camp Kipwe offers a range of exciting excursions and activities to explore the surrounding areas, for both wildlife and culture. Head out in search of desert-adapted elephants, go hiking or take a trip to see the famous rock art at Twyfelfontein, Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes – spectacular rock formations.
