With just eight tents, you’re assured of an intimate experience at Mashatu Tented Camp, while the friendly team of staff – most of whom have worked here for over a decade – contribute hugely to the friendly atmosphere. Liberal use of traditional building materials like wood and thatch evoke the style of a classic tented camp, with your natural surroundings never far away.
Mashatu Game Reserve, nestled in the easternmost arm of Botswana at the country’s borders with Zimbabwe and South Africa, is a destination certainly off the beaten track (but all the better for it). Offering vast open spaces, incredible vistas, breathtaking night skies and prolific wildlife-viewing opportunities, the reserve is ideal for seasoned safari-goers wishing to take a step outside of the norm on their next visit to Botswana. Mashatu Tented Camp is located in natural surroundings and is well situated for excursions further into the reserve.
Accommodation & Facilities
Each one of the spacious and private tents here comes complete with outdoor en-suite facilities (including bucket shower), comfortable beds and stylish furnishings. Tucked under the branches of towering trees, these tents are a great choice for those wishing to stay in touch with nature even after their safari activities have ended for the day. A plunge pool is also available for when temperatures start to soar.
Meals are served four times a day here – for breakfast, brunch, high tea and dinner – and can be enjoyed either in the open-air thatched gazebo or the communal boma area, overlooking a floodlit waterhole frequented by local wildlife. A wide range of delicious cuisine is prepared buffet-style by the camp’s chefs, ensuring each guest finds a dish suited to their palate.
At the camp, a shaded hide allows guest to sit and watch local wildlife without fear of intrusion. Mashatu Game Reserve is one of the best destinations for wildlife photographers in all of Africa, with a number of hides situated across the area, a resident photographer who can provide expert tutoring, and a safari vehicle designed exclusively for the use of keen snappers. The wildlife here is rich and varied – including lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, giraffes, ostriches, zebra and over 1,000 elephants – all of which can be sighted on game drives, cycling safaris, walking safaris and horseback safaris.
Children over the age of 12 are welcome.
