Safari Overview

Spend an exhilarating 12 days soaking up the wildlife, culture and rainforests of Borneo. You start your adventure with a little bit of relaxation at the beautiful Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort. After this, get your hiking shoes and head to Mt Kinabalu where you spend the next two days trekking to the summit, before heading to the hot springs to rest your muscles and explore trails and caves. You also visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, then onto the wild Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley for some incredible wildlife sightings.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Kota Kinabalu

You will be met upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu airport and transferred to the Rasa Ria 5-star resort. This luxury hotel is set on Pantai Dalit beach and surrounded by 400 acres of lush tropical vegetation. This is a perfect place to relax into your Borneo adventure.

Day 2

Kota Kinabalu

Imagine a private paradise cradled between forested hills and a long sweep of a 3 km long, untouched, pristine beach, washed by the South China Sea. After breakfast you have a choice of activities from beach relaxation to canopy walks amidst a remarkable array of indigenous flora and fauna. Surprising encounters with hornbills gliding right overhead, peacocks displaying during breakfast, a bear cat greeting you from a tree or the occasional iguana crossing your path are all part of the magic of this remarkable resort.

Day 3

Kota Kinabalu - Mount Kinabalu

An exciting morning as you transfer to Timpohon Gate for the start of your Mount Kinabalu climb. Accompanied by our local mountain guide, you set off on your hiking adventure up Southeast Asia’s highest peak. Today you’ll make your way through lots of different terrains as you make your way to Lows Peak where you’ll stop and recoup overnight with some astounding views. Mount Kinabalu is high, and the rewards of climbing it are great. Any reasonably fit and healthy person will be capable, and you can do it in your own time.

Day 4

Mount Kinabalu Climb

An early start today as you aim to get to the peak in time to watch the sun rise. an unforgettable sight, make sure you get lots of photos so the memories of your journey last forever. From here you descend to the park HQ and collect your certificate. Mid-afternoon we will take you on to Poring Hot Springs for a theraputic bath in the natural sulphur water. Marked trails take you to small waterfalls and caves - an excellent wind down after an energetic start to your Borneo wildlife tour.

Day 5

Mount Kinabalu - Sepilok

Today you will be transferred to Sepilok. Upon arrival here in the afternoon you can check in and catch the afternoon feeding of the orangutans. This is a great experience as previously captive orangutans (through deforestation, poaching, etc) are being re-habituated to their natural surroundings for release when they are once again capable of supporting themselves. After sunset, you can venture out and join a night walk into the jungle in search of nocturnal animals; a thrilling experience!

Day 6

Orangutan & sun bear sanctuaries

Awake early this morning for a walk in the jungle and watch as it comes to life under the warm sun. Afterwards, head to the sanctuary to catch the morning and afternoon orangutan feedings. These magnificent and curious primates are wonderful to watch, and the sanctuary is a great place to see them up close, knowing they are being rehabilitated. This is not a zoo, but a place for these animals to rehabilitate after poaching and deforestation has taken their homes. The hope is for them to be released back into the wild when they are ready. You will also have chance to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre within the grounds and the Sunbear Conservation Centre nearby.

Day 7

Sepilok - Kinabatangan River

You transfer today to Bilit on the Kinabatangan River; similar to Sukau, bilit is less developed, and is one of the best places to see wild orangutans. Explore this area of mangrove and rainforest either on foot or by boat. The river safari visits a variety of fauna and flora along the banks of the Kinabatangan River including orangutans and proboscis monkeys.

Day 8

Kinabatangan River

A full day to go on river safari excursions and explore a variety of fauna and flora along the banks of the Kinabatangan River including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, tree snakes, crocodiles, civets, monitor lizards macaques and much more. Herds of wild elephant can also be seen passing along the banks of the river and surrounding area. There are also many forest trails to explore on foot or by bicycle. This evening, head to the Gomantong Caves where you can witness about 300,000 bats fly out to start their nights hunting.

Day 9

Kinabatangan - Danum Valley

Today you make your way south to the renowned Danum Valley. On arrival at your rainforest lodge you will have time to sit back and relax and enjoy the surroundings. Danum Valley is one of the best remaining examples of how Borneo's forests used to be, with a thick tropical canopy and a variety of wildlife.

Days 10-11

Danum Valley

Danum Valley is a pristine 43 kilometre square example of how Borneo’s rainforests were before deforestation. It is home to lots of wildlife, including orangutans, proboscis monkeys and elephant. The lucky ones may even spot clouded leopard or Sumatran rhino. You’ll have lots of time to explore the canopy walkways, nature trails and walkways here, and even float down the Danum River on tubes and splash around in natural Jacuzzi pools.

Day 12

Depart Danum Valley

Today is your last in Borneo, after you’ve said your farewells to the Danum Valley, we’ll transfer you to Lahad Datu Airport for your onward flight.
