Day 2

Kudat Rungus

After breakfast, you'll be picked up from your hotel for a 3-hour drive through scenic countryside to Kudat. You will be passing through rural areas full of paddy fields, villages and plantations. Along the way, make a short stop at roadside stalls for snacks and handicrafts if you wish. Continue your journey to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, also known as the “Tip of Borneo”, where the South China Sea meets the Sulu Sea flowing from the east. From here, proceed to Bavanggazo Village to visit a traditional Rungus longhouse. Built entirely from local materials, the longhouse is the home of the entire Rungus community, a sub-tribe of the indigenous Kadazandusun people. During your visit you will have the chance to observe their unique beadworks, lifestyle and costumes, as well as enjoying lunch with the locals ‘Rungus-style’. After lunch, you will be transferred back to Kota Kinabalu, stopping at a village along the way that is well known for its local artisans and gong-making traditions. The remainder of the day is yours to spend at leisure.

Day 3

Kota Kinabalu – Sepilok

You have the morning to relax before being transferred to the airport for your short flight to the city of Sandakan, close to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Day 4

Sepilok, Sun Bears & Labuk Bay

After breakfast you will visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in time for their morning feed. This sanctuary rehabilitates previously captive or orphaned orangutans (through deforestation, poaching, etc.) to their natural surroundings, ready for release when they are capable of supporting themselves in the wild. You then have a tour of the Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn all about the project to save these adorable bears, whose population is rapidly diminishing. After lunch you will head to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary in time for the afternoon feedings. Proboscis monkeys, found only in coastal swamps close to rivers in certain areas of Borneo, are lucky to have survived after the area near the mangrove swamps was nearly lost to palm oil plantations. Plans for oil were dropped, and now around 60 monkeys regularly come here to feed. Famed for their large nose, which acts as a resonator for their loud honking noises, these pot-bellied primates really are a sight to behold.

Overnight: Sepilok Nature Resort (B, L, D)

Day 5

Sepilok – Lower Kinabatangan River

After checking out from your accommodation, you will head back to the Orangutan Sanctuary to visit the nursery platform, where you can watch the young and juvenile orangutans at play. You will also catch the morning feeding of the older apes at the main viewing platform.
