Safari Overview

A spectacular two-week journey through wildlife-rich Borneo including Sepilok, where you can see orangutans as they are re-habituated after deforestation or poaching, and the Kinabatangan River, a haven for wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys, mouse deer, wild boar and buffalo. You will then move on to the Danum Valley, a pristine example of Borneo's primary rainforest, where you can explore via the canopy walkway and viewpoint. Finally,  head off to the paradise island of Gaya for some relaxation and water activities, from diving and snorkelling to relaxing on the powder-white sands.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Kota Kinabalu

Upon your arrival into Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI), you will be met with a warm welcome and then transferred to your hotel which will be your home for the next three nights. The rest of the day will be at your leisure.

Day 2


Enjoy an early breakfast before embarking on a full day journey to Borneo’s northern tip of Kudat. The drive will take around three hours as you travel through scenic countryside, passing paddy fields, villages and palm oil plantations along the way. Arriving into Bavenggazo Village, you will have the opportunity to visit a traditional longhouse as well as many local eco-businesses. Ending your day’s adventure, you will travel to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, the northern tip of Borneo, to enjoy the spectacular view where the South China Sea and Sulu Sea meet. Return to your hotel in Kota Kinabalu in the evening.

Day 3

Kota Kinabalu - Sepilok

Today you will have the morning to enjoy the facilities of your beachfront hotel before transferring to the airport for your short flight to Sandakan. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred the short journey by road to Sepilok, home to numerous rehabilitation centres for wildlife. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 4


This morning you will head to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for a guided tour. Trek though the rainforest along wooden boardwalks to witness the orangutan feeding before, proceeding to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, from where you will get the opportunity to watch these unique and endangered bears, the smallest in south east Asia. After lunch back at the lodge, head out to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, home to the fascinating primates that are endemic to Borneo.

Day 5

Sepilok - Kinabatangan River

Following a return visit to Sepilok to watch the morning feeding, you will head to the jetty in Sandakan to catch your boat transfer up the mighty Kinabatangan River to the riverside village of Abai. From here, enjoy lunch before taking to the water once more on an afternoon river safari in search of wild orangutans and other species. Watch the river banks as they twinkle with the glow of thousands of fireflies. After dinner, embark on a night walk in search of nocturnal wildlife.

Day 6

Kinabatangan River

Rise early for a morning cruise on the river to the oxbow lake. Returning to the lodge for breakfast, you can enjoy a tour of the village and some time to learn about the successful tree-planting community project. After lunch with the locals, you will take the boat upriver to the village of Sukau, looking for wildlife as you go. After checking in to your riverside lodge, join an afternoon river cruise to the Menanggul River, watching the riverbanks as the proboscis monkeys make their nests in the overhanging branches as the sun dips in the sky.

Day 7

Kinabatangan River

Another early start this morning as you set off for a sunrise cruise along the Kinabatangan River. Spend the middle of the day relaxing at your riverside lodge or exploring the grounds, before heading out to the Gomantong Caves in the afternoon. The caves are home to over 300,000 bats, of 64 different species and is also well known for being a harvesting site for bird’s nest soup ingredients. As dusk descends, observe the swiftlets returning to the cave in their thousands after a busy day’s foraging, and the bats emerging from the cave’s mouth as they depart on their night of feeding.

Day 8

Kinabatangan River - Danum Valley

Today you make your way southwards to the renowned Danum Valley. On arrival at your rainforest lodge you will have time to sit back and relax and enjoy the surroundings. Danum Valley is one of the best remaining examples of how Borneo's forests used to be, with a thick tropical canopy and a variety of wildlife.

Days 9-10

Danum Valley

Set up to protect the area from logging, Danum encompasses 43 kilometres squared of pristine rainforest. Aside from this the conservation area has a variety of wildlife including, orang-utans, a variety of birdlife, clouded leopard, elephant and if one is very lucky the Sumatran rhino. With both a canopy walkway and a viewpoint which looks out over the jungle canopy and the dramatic mountains this conservation area is definitely worth dropping in on.

Day 11

Danum Valley - Gaya Island

After breakfast at the lodge, you will be transferred to the town of Lahad Datu to catch your flight across Sabah to Kota Kinabalu, the state capital. On arrival in Kota Kinabalu, you will be met and transferred to the jetty where you will catch a speedboat across to Gaya Island. Located within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Reserve, Gaya Island is a safe and beautiful location from which to snorkel and dive or simply relax on the stunning beaches.

Days 12-13

Gaya Island

Gaya Island is a spectacular way to end your honeymoon, with glistening white sand beaches and surrounded by bright turquoise water, perfect for snorkelling and diving. Immerse yourself in the many activities available at your resort, or simply relax and soak up the sun's rays.

Day 14

Depart Gaya Island

Today you will be returned to the mainland by boat and transferred to the airport for your onward flight home.
