Dry Season in Costa Rica (December to April)
The dry season, also known as Costa Rica’s verano or summer, typically runs from December through April. These months are considered the best time to visit Costa Rica for sunshine and outdoor adventures, with clear skies and minimal rainfall. For example, the Caribbean coast, including areas such as Tortuguero and Puerto Viejo, tends to receive more rainfall year-round, so occasional showers can still be expected even during the dry season.
If you're planning a trip between February and April, keep in mind that spring break in the United States can lead to increased crowds in popular areas like Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio. For surfers, this season offers excellent conditions on the Caribbean side, where winter swells create more consistent and powerful waves compared to the typically calmer Pacific coast.
Rainy Season in Costa Rica (May to November)
Costa Rica’s rainy season, also known locally as the green season, runs from May to November and brings with it lush, vibrant landscapes and fewer tourists. While this is considered the country’s low season for tourism, it can be a fantastic time to visit if you don’t mind the afternoon rain showers. Mornings are generally warm and sunny, with rain developing later in the day.
The wettest months are typically September and October, particularly along the Pacific coast. This time of year is best for surfers looking to ride larger swells, with the Pacific coast delivering some of the best surf conditions. Wildlife is often more active during these months, and photographers will appreciate the rich, saturated colours of the rainforest.
