Indian Ocean in May

May weather and when to go

May is a good time to enjoy an Indian Ocean holiday as most destinations boast long, dry days during this time making it perfect for beach relaxation and water-based activities. The Seychelles enjoy temperatures of around 28 degrees and not only is the air temperature pleasant, the sea water is warm too. Visibility off the coast of the Seychelles can reach over 30m which makes it incredible for snorkelling.

The Maldives enjoy warm days with long sunny spells which is exactly what you want when relaxing on the white sandy beaches.

There may be some chance of rain across the islands but is unlikely to perpetuate whole days so won’t ruin your beach experience.

May is also the start of best time to visit Mauritius. The island has unique micro climates so can be different across the island at the same time, but May generally has pleasant temperatures and dry days. Northern and western parts of the island are usually the warmest and driest so choose accommodation in this area for the best chance of hot, sunny days. Mauritius can be quite quiet at this time so you may have long stretches of beach to yourself!

If you’re looking for more land-based activities, Reunion Island is great for hiking at this time with plenty of scenic routes to explore from May to October. The volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, is a popular attraction, although it is still very active so plan your trip carefully.
