Surrounded by the magnificent Ecuadorian Andes, Hacienda Abraspungo is located at 2,754 metres above sea level. This is a comfortable and charming hotel, with fantastic service and traditional colonial design.

Named after a glacial valley that lies in the centre of Ecuador, between Carihuairazo and the Chimborazo Volcano, the halls are adorned testimonies to the years gone by, with photos and illustrations.

Setting

Just outside the centre of Riobamba in the heart of Ecuador, about a 3 hour drive from Quito.

Accommodation & Facilities

Each of the 42 rooms is a charming and comfortable combination of modern interior design and traditional, colonial architecture. Rooms are available as singles, doubles, triples and suites, each stylishly and elegantly appointed. Rooms are spread between the distinct wings of the hacienda, each with direct access to the beautiful gardens.

The restaurant features antiques and images from the region, as well as a warming fireplaces and the bar features antique musical instruments, well supplied with wines and liquors. There is also wireless internet, massage and natural therapy, a games room, handicraft shop, tennis/volleyball courts and a playground for children.

Dining

The menu uses local produce, grown and cultivated using the traditional ancestral techniques of the Andes, mixing culinary gourmet techniques with local flavours.

Activities

This is a wonderful spot to enjoy a range of activities, with some very exciting options just a stones throw away. Enjoy a city tour of Riobamba, ride the world famous Devil’s Nose and visit indigenous markets. Climb or trek the Chimborazo Province through various ecosystems. To get even further out, try horse riding, where it may be possible to 5 volcanoes from a certain point, observe the migratory birds around Colca Lake or visit the village of Cajabamba. You can also go mountain biking through Chimborazo or Colca, take a Lake tour or join a polo class.

You can also follow the trails of the ‘ice farmers’, as eachTuesday and Friday they chip away ice blocks from the Chimborazo Volcano to be used in the preparation of the famous ‘raspados’ snow cones.
