Arrive into San Jose where your family will be met by our local representatives and transferred to your hotel for the night. Depending on what time you arrive you may have chance to explore the city or simply relax in your hotel before the real adventure begins tomorrow.
Following breakfast, you will head to the Poas Volcano, visiting Doka coffee plantation and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Poas is one of the most spectacular volcanoes in the country, with its enormous crater measuring 1 km in diameter and 314 metres deep. Heading back to the hotel after lunch, visit the largest butterfly observatory in Costa Rica, and the impressive hummingbird gallery.
Today you will depart early and drive to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. Swapping land for water, you will take a two hour boat transfer through the jungle to your remote rainforest lodge, where you will spend the afternoon exploring the nearby forest trails with a guide.
Overnight: Mawamba Lodge (B, L, D)
This morning, head out to the jungle trails with your guide, who will point out the local wildlife. In the afternoon, take to the river and head out on a canal boat safari through the national park. With 11 distinct life zones ranging from raffia palm forest to herbaceous swamps, the park offers one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in Costa Rica, and a boat safari is by far the best way to explore this area. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife such as river otters, caimans, howler monkeys and an abundance of birdlife.

Begin your day with a walk along the Hanging Bridges – trails and bridges throughout the forest located within a popular bird migration corridor. Here you will have the chance to learn more about the forest and the local environment as you walk in the forest canopy. After lunch, head to the perfectly conical Arenal volcano where a gentle hike will take you along the lower slopes to the area destroyed by the volcano’s first eruption in 1968.
Today you will transfer to the cloud forests at Monteverde. The climate here is temperate and humid, with an average temperature of 17 degrees Celsius. Your accommodation for the next few nights is the Trapp Family Lodge situated in a private reserve great for bird watching and nature trails.
