Safari Overview

Sibuya may not be a big name, but it makes a big impression on any traveller lucky enough to pay a visit. One of South Africa’s most beautiful private game reserves, Sibuya is found along the coast of the Eastern Cape, and its plains, forests, riverbanks and rolling hills are home to a rich variety of wildlife, including almost 400 species of bird. The reserve is also malaria-free, offers a high density of game and welcomes children to one of its tented camps, making it a decidedly family-friendly destination. After three days in Sibuya, the rest of your trip will be based in the idyllic Cape St Francis Resort, where a plethora of exciting activities and day excursions – as well as plenty of opportunities for relaxation – make for a wonderful end to your time in the Eastern Cape.

What makes this trip extraordinary

  • Embark on a total of six game drives through South Africa’s only game reserve accessed solely by boat.
  • Travel into the wilds of Sibuya along the winding Kariega River.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Sibuya Game Reserve

After arriving into Port Elizabeth Airport, you’ll be met by our local representative and transferred about 1.5 hours east to Sibuya Game Reserve. Sibuya does not boast the size or visitor numbers of more well-known South African parks and reserves like Kruger, but this hidden gem contains a wealth of flora and fauna within its borders that makes any trip a memorable experience. At the start of your first day here you’ll take a scenic boat ride upriver to your chosen camp or lodge, watching as the grassy flats and sandbanks roll by. After settling into your accommodation you’ll be able to take two game drives through the reserve, watching out for the Big Five as well as rarer sights like blue duiker, oribi and bontebok. Sibuya’s high carrying capacity assures an intensive and varied game-viewing experience throughout the reserve’s 30 square kilometres.

Days 2-3

Sibuya Game Reserve

A further two game drives will be available each day for you while staying in Sibuya, and the sights on offer are plentiful and varied. Herds of zebra, giraffe and eland graze windswept plateaus while lions and leopards stalk their quarry through the bush. Jackals are common sights here, as are the family groups of Cape buffalo and elephant that wallow in the Kariega River. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot an aardvark or prowling caracal. In addition to game drives, guests can also go birdwatching and horse-riding, or join one of Sibuya’s guides for a bush walk. Water-based activities include boat cruises, canoeing, fishing, swimming and even seaside picnics. When your day’s adventure is at an end, return to your camp or lodge to sit by the campfire and reminisce over the sights you’ve seen, surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

Day 4

Sibuya Game Reserve – Cape St Francis

Today you’ll depart Sibuya and make your way to Cape St Francis Resort, located the other side of Port Elizabeth. Arriving in time for lunch, you’ll have the rest of the day to spend at leisure here in this charming coastal resort that offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of South Africa’s cities. An excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area – where you’ll find white-sand beaches and a number of nature reserves – this resort also offers a host of activities for those with itchy feet. Walking through the area’s network of nature trails, for one, is a wonderful way to recharge after the preceding days’ safari excursions. In the evening, make your way to Sunset Rock for a seafront picnic.

Overnight: Beach Break at Cape St Francis Resort B, L, D

Day 5

Cape St Francis

Two activities are on the menu today, from a choice of four. The St Francis Bay Golf Club offers an 18-hole course composed of bunkers, lakes and beautifully tended green lawns – prime territory for all keen golfers. South Africa’s Cape is one of the best places in the world for surfers, and even beginners will be well catered for should they wish to set foot on a board for the first time. Beach yoga is the perfect way to centre yourself after a long day out on the ocean or the golf course, but the spa treatments aren’t to be sniffed at either. After an afternoon beach walk complete with calamari tasting, sit down at Joe Fish Restaurant and Bar to bring in the evening with glass of wine in hand.

Overnight: Beach Break at Cape St Francis Resort B, L, D

Day 6

Cape St Francis

On your final day here in Cape St Francis, you can choose to take one of two exciting day trips. The first will take you up the Kromme River on a luxury 12-seater barge, sailing past grazing bushbucks, hunting waterbirds and spectacular views of the mountainous Groot Winterhoek region. Alternatively, an hour’s drive northwest will bring you to the pristine Baviaanskloof Reserve, a stunning area full of natural wonders, from the herds of Cape mountain zebra to the deep rivers that wend their way through deep gorges beneath towering cliff faces.

Overnight: Beach Break at Cape St Francis Resort B, L, D

Day 7

Depart Cape St Francis

After breakfast you’ll have time to go on Betty’s Tour, three stops which showcase the ways Cape St Francis Resort are giving back to the local wildlife and community. The penguin rehabilitation centre at Seal Point Lighthouse is sure to put a smile on your face, while Talhado Children’s Haven is an initiative that provides much-needed care and education for disadvantaged children in the St Francis Bay area. Your final stop will be Nomvula’s Knitters, a South African knitwear company that supports the St Francis Bay community through employment, training, education and health services. A shuttle bus will then take you to Port Elizabeth Airport to catch your international flight home.
