Specialist led, small group safaris

Small group holidays – also known as set departures – are fixed-itinerary safaris ideal for those looking to travel with like-minded people. This isn’t restricted to solo travellers though, couples and small groups are also more than welcome to join these departures too. Not only are these safaris very social and run by expert guides, they also give you the benefit of travelling to remote – and therefore usually more expensive – destinations for a fraction of the price by splitting the cost between everyone in the group. Whether you wish to explore the Polar Regions via small ship, discover Madagascar’s endemic species or track mountain gorillas in Rwanda we can arrange a small group safari for you.

Our small group safaris span the globe and enable you and your group to witness some of the most magnificent wildlife in the world.

With the exception of expedition trips to Antarctica and the Arctic, our set departures are limited to very small group sizes allowing groups to better connect and enjoy intimate wildlife encounters. Some of our trips, such as Swimming with Blue Whales in Sri Lanka, have as few as four people per departure so as to ensure each member of the group can spend quality time in the water alongside the whales. These trips with such small group sizes, or those that have very small windows for wildlife happenings (Polar Bear Mother & Cubs or Ice Grizzlies of the Yukon) can be booked up years in advance so pre-booking is essential.

Some of our most popular set departures are specialist-led safaris which involve travelling with an expert guide - be that a naturalist, photographer or author - to enhance your experience. This allows you to gain an extra insight into the destination you are travelling in and perhaps hone your photography skills in order to capture the wildlife and landscapes of your location with precision. This can be particularly important in the Polar Regions as photographing in cold conditions and trying to capture icy landscapes is notoriously difficult.

Our Svalbard small ship charters have been extremely successful with all previous groups encountering polar bears, walrus, seals, Arctic birds and more throughout their journeys. In 2017 we are running numerous specialist-led trips aboard the M/S Freya; with photographer David Yarrow, naturalist and TV presenter Steve Backshall, and wildlife photographers and videographers Shannon Wild and Russ MacLaughlin.
