Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka in September

September weather & where to go

September offers great odds on fabulous weather throughout the country, it is an inter-monsoon month so the odd showers can be expected, but they are short and sweet. It is mainly dry and warm across Sri Lanka, with an average temperature of about 29°C. As the north-east monsoon starts to creep in towards the end of the month, you can start to expect a bit more rain. For warmer, dryer weather, best to travel earlier in the month.

The hillier Tea Country has a bit more rainfall in September, and the east coast is seeing its final few weeks of fabulous weather before it sees more rain too.

Yala, Uda Walawe and Wilpattu are great for wildlife at this time, from elephants to leopards. If you want to see elephants, September is the last month of the stunning elephant gathering in Minneriya National Park and the number of these magnificent creatures can reach over 300 individuals.

The Cultural Triangle still has lots of sunshine and Kandy is just begging to be explored.

Overall, September is considered a shoulder season and can be a magical time to travel. The monsoon has been known in recent years to start a little earlier, so we would recommend travelling towards the beginning of the month where possible.

You can still combine your wildlife safari with culture, and head up north.
