Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka in December

December weather & where to go

December can be a fantastic time to travel. If the monsoon has ended, the weather can be hot, dry and sunny across the country and you can expect wonderful beach weather over this Christmas period.

The monsoon often has ceased or calmed by the start of December, leaving behind lush green landscapes begging to be explored. The Tea Country, Horton Plains and other rural areas are exceptionally beautiful after the rains have calmed. This does, however, mean that it is a popular time to visit these areas and beds can be in demand, resulting in peak prices.

Do still expect chilly evenings and wet landscapes.

The southern and western coasts are prone to long periods of bright sunshine, alongside an average temperature of about 30°C. This really is a prime time if you want to soak up the sun after your safari, with areas such as Galle, Bentota, Negombo, Mirissa and Weligama all stunning places to visit.

The wildlife parks are also good at this time, although spotting the animals can be a little tougher in a lush landscape as it they have more opportunity to hide. The birding, as ever, in Udawalawe is wonderful and we would never say not to track leopards in Yala National Park, spotting these Asiatic cats in the wild is breathtaking at any time of the year.

Sri Lanka is great in December, but peak season has started.

We can recommend the best dates to travel to avoid the high season surcharges, but we can also recommend the best beaches to spend Christmas day - and to be honest we can’t think of many better places to spend this fabulous day of the year.
