Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka in April

April weather & where to go

The beginning of April is similar to March, in that it is an excellent time to travel if you want to experience Sri Lanka in more of an ‘all-round’ sense. Wildlife, beach and culture can all be experienced in the one trip, so it is especially great if you want to travel the country a bit more, the north is starting to pick up as well.

The wildlife parks of the east experience less rain during April, and there is plenty of sunshine to entice the animals out of their hides. Yala is wonderful for leopards at this time and camping in the park is an option, ensuring you experience an authentic wildlife trip. Udawalawe is again good for elephant, crocodiles and buffalo and experiencing less rain as we head into the warmer climes.

Mirissa is excellent for whales at this time.

In the south west, the beaches of Tangalle and Galle are on top form with blazing sunshine and little rain. The beaches on the east coast are starting to pick up now too, with Trincomalee now a wonderful place to travel to. The same can be said of the cultural triangle which is receiving lots of sun, and little rainfall, similar to Kandy, Tea Country and Nuwara Eliya.

April almost rides March’s wave, with an excellent start all round. Towards the end of the month, there is an increase in rainfall in the western, and southern coasts, as well as central areas, such as tea country, so it really is about right place, right time during this month.

Again, you may get to experience the Sri Lankan New Year, Avurudu, but the dates change annually according to the lunar calendar, so we will need to arrange this for you.
