Lavishly spacious and contemporary beach retreat.
Just a short distance from local village life and plenty of Flora and Fauna, Amanwella is on the south coast of Sri Lanka, about a four hour drive from Colombo Airport.
Accommodation & Facilities
All 30 suites are identical in design, falling into either the ‘ocean’ or ‘pool’ category, depending on the views and location. The suites are located on a hill, joined by paths, each with their own fantastic views to the ocean or the beach. The interiors contrast wood, honey, beige and white for a clean and pure, comfortable feel. Large floor-to-ceiling glass windows welcome in the warm Sri Lankan air, opening out on one side to your own cleverly designed, private plunge pool and courtyard, with space to dine. The large sleeping and dining area features a personal bar and king-sized bed. The open plan bathroom is separated from this via sliding doors, including a free standing bath tub, twin vanities and toilet.
The main facilities include a library and boutique filled with Sri Lankan artefacts, jewellery and antiques, as well as convenience items. The swimming pool is 47 metres long, surrounded by a large terrace, sun loungers are available, as well as private outdoor showers. There is a spa too for those looking for a bit more indulgence.
The restaurant is 8 metres above sea level, with stunning views past the pool to the coconut grove and beach. Special emphasis is placed on local seafood from the Indian Ocean, with a mix of Asian and Mediterranean style. There is also a lounge bar with panoramic views, a Pool Terrace for alfresco dining and a Beach Club a little closer to the beachfront. Room service is 24 hours.
During the winter, swimming in the calm sea right outside of the retreat is fantastic and you can snorkel along the southern headland (complementary equipment available). Swimming here in the summer months is not recommended due to large waves, but it’s perfect for surfers, with lessons available with lifeguards at nearby beaches. There are plenty of nature tours available from here, from village walks and the Mulgirigala Rock Temple to further locations, such as Yala National Park, Uda Walawe National Park and Bundala National Park. 10 Kilometres away you will find the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project. Whale watching is fantastic between December and April, especially in Mirissa Harbour, which is about 90 minutes from Amanwella. You can even snorkel with the whales, the largest living animals on earth, straight from your boat.
For those who wish to stay within the retreat, there are lots of spa options available in your own suite, the Spa Suite or even throughout selected garden locations. Or you can relax by the peaceful pool and reminisce on your wild Sri Lankan safari.
Children welcome. There is a complimentary babysitting service and extra beds available for under 12’s.
