Style
Matching high-end opulence with classic African influences, Thanda Island will leave no guest wanting, yet its design doesn’t lose sight of the Tanzanian culture at its heart.
Setting
Here on your own private island, the world is yours. With the azure waters of the Indian Ocean stretching off to the horizon and a veritable feast of luxury amenities and activities at your disposal, all your troubles are sure to drift away like a seaweed frond in the tide. Thanda Island is also situated within the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve, ensuring a healthy environment both for yourself and the region’s prodigious marine life.
Accommodation & Facilities
Two traditional Tanzanian bandas are available on Thanda Island, each with two en-suite bedrooms and a hefty dose of East African flair. Beautiful hand-carved furniture and vibrant, locally produced fabrics combine well with the profusion of wood and thatch for an authentic aesthetic. As wonderful as the bandas are, the pièce de résistance on Thanda Island is undoubtedly the 788m2 luxury villa. Here you’ll find an indoor aquarium, Steinway grand piano, extensive wine collection, cigar humidor, cocktail bar, pizza oven, glass rim-flow swimming pool, wraparound dining area with 180° views of the ocean, alfresco barbecue deck, copper beach baths, and five air-conditioned bedrooms furnished with king-sized beds and direct access to Thanda’s white sands… Villas don’t get much better than this.
Dining
Overseen by executive head chef Melissa McDonald, the dining experience at Thanda Island is a delectable affair that provides something for everyone. You’ll have your choice of ocean-fresh seafood, crisp seasonal vegetables, tropical fruits, a variety of game and poultry dishes, and a smorgasbord of divine desserts. Vegans and vegetarians are also well catered for, with Thanda's expert culinary team arranging a unique menu for every guest prior to their arrival. In addition, you can try your hand at pizza-making in the alfresco dining area, sample a special Swahili Feast, and enjoy an Arabian Nights-themed evening complete with authentic Afghan accoutrements and live music.
Activities
If you can tear yourself away from the idyllic beachfront, there are a wealth of activities on offer here that will suit all comers. Unsurprisingly, the ocean serves as the setting for many, including snorkelling, jet skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, wakeboarding, and swimming with whale sharks. Guests can also make use of the well-equipped spa, take a trip to Tanzania’s capital of Dar es Salaam (just a short boat ride away) and explore the picturesque collection of nearby islands, including the historic trading hub of Zanzibar.
Child Policy
Children are welcome on Thanda Island, and further beds can be provided for larger families.
