Setting
The Saxon located in Sandhurst on the outskirts of Johannesburg within 10 peaceful acres of landscaped gardens and is only a short drive from the airport.
Accommodation and Facilities
There are several types of suites available at the Saxon, all of which provide guests with the opportunity to relax in opulent surroundings. The Luxury rooms have comfortable king-sized beds, separate bathrooms, open plan dining and lounge area, business desk, Wi-Fi and iPod dock. These spacious rooms boast elegant and tasteful decors inspired by a warm African style. Contemporary art decorates the walls, and large windows offer spectacular views over the landscaped gardens. There is also a spacious one bedroom suite which has a grand king size four-poster bed, separate bathroom with walk-in shower, business desk, iPod dock, guest bathroom, and private balcony which overlooks the gardens. There is also a butler service and butler’s kitchen.
There are larger Presidential Suites and an Executive Villa to stay in, which exude grandeur and are perfect for those who desire a little more privacy. The spacious Presidential suites have guest bathrooms and lounge, as well as a dining room, bathroom with Jacuzzi, walk-in shower and bath, steam room and butler’s kitchen and butler service. The Executive Villa has seven Luxury Rooms, each with king-size bed, butler service, seating and dining areas. The Villa is located separately in the gardens with its own private terrace, and guests staying in the rooms have access to the private plunge pool and spa suite.
Dining
The Saxon offers a high-quality dining experience for guests. The Saxon chefs use vegetables and herbs freshly grown in the rooftop garden, and design their dishes based on what is in season at the time. There are three excellent restaurants to choose from, and sommeliers who will recommend the perfect wine to accompany your meal.
Activities
The Saxon is ideal for exploring the African bush; pre book a night’s stay at the Zulu Camp at the Shambala Private Game Reserve, where you can spot leopard, buffalo, elephant, black rhino, antelope and many bird species. You will stay in a rustic thatched cottage overnight and wake up in the spectacular surroundings of the Reserve. The hotel’s close proximity to Johannesburg means that visiting this wonderful city is an easy option for your time here. Johannesburg is great for wildlife-lovers; visit the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, a conservation centre which has helped breed over 800 cubs in the past 40 years. Head to the Montecasino Bird Garden to spot some of the 1000 birds there, as well as smaller reptiles and mammals, or go to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens for a guided tour through this magnificent reserve.
For those wishing to learn a little more about the history and culture of South Africa – visit the Maropeng Visitor Centre to gain knowledge on the development of humans, or The Cradle of Humankind – a site where some of the oldest hominid fossils were discovered. Alternatively, you could take in some local theatre, or visit the local markets or shopping centres. The Saxon Hotel makes the perfect retreat for those who wish to relax and unwind. Visit the Saxon Spa Studio to rejuvenate and relax throughout your stay, or head poolside to lounge beside the turquoise waters with a book. The pool terrace is a great place to take in the magnificent sunset too.
