South Africa Family Safaris

Everything you need to know about family safaris in South Africa...

South Africa offers a surprising amount when it comes to family safaris and with everything from mountains and deserts, to the Big Five and sumptuous beaches, you are bound to find something for all the family. We understand that with children, flexibility is key and with the option of self-drive, as well as family friendly (not just tolerant) hotels and lodges, you will have just that.

There is just a 2 hour time difference between South Africa and the UK, eliminating jet lag and there are plenty of malaria free parks for some peace of mind when it comes to health and safety.

What to do

The stunning beaches and striking scenery of Cape Town make the ideal introduction to South Africa. The Garden Route, a long stretch of coast between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, has everything from ancient forests and mountains to secluded art communities and luscious beaches with possible whale and dolphin sightings. When it comes to wildlife, South Africa has some of the finest reserves in Africa, many of them small with a high animal density, so you can see more in a short amount of time, ideal for those youngsters with a short attention span. Although with lots of zebra, giraffes, elephant, lions and leopards, we’re sure keeping their attention in these incredible areas of rolling savannah won’t be a problem!

For those interested in a bit of history and culture, there are lots of old battlefields all over South Africa that are accessible to interested tourists.

You can even stay within a recreated Zulu cultural village at Shakaland, east of Durban, to watch traditional gum boot dances, watch hunting demos and even have a consultation with a witch doctor to heal any ailments..!

Travel Information

There is great accommodation for families across South Africa, from large or boutique hotels in the major cities to camping and lodges inside, and on the border of National Parks and Reserves. The self-catering camps are great for families, offering the opportunity to eat whatever you like, whenever you like. However there are also some brilliant lodges out there that provide fantastic child facilities. There are a variety of stunning wine routes that you can follow where the accommodation is mainly in Cape Dutch farm houses, with swimming pools and a myriad of exciting activities to keep young ones entertained.

After a wildlife packed safari or spectacular tour of the wilderness, whether it be desert or snow topped mountains, there are some wonderful beach areas to finish your holiday. The warm Indian Ocean off the south coast or the cooler Atlantic, just away from Cape Town are beautiful places to take a break and excitedly discuss what you have seen and done during your South African Safari. Or, on the opposite end of the scale, there are lots of theme parks and water parks within South Africa for a more thrilling end to your journey!

South Africa is the perfect spot for that family safari, great value for money, with all the beauty and wildlife you could expect from an African location, yet the ease of travel, high health standards and family welcoming accommodation that one needs.

Cuisine is easy for those young ones to palate and the roads and transport have been massively upgraded since the World Cup in 2010, meaning a self-drive is an easy and flexible option.
