Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Longyearbyen

Depending on your flight time you will either already be in Longyearbyen – and can explore the town before boarding the ship – or will be arriving in the morning of your safari. Once in Longyearbyen you will be met by the expedition team ready to board the M/S Freya, your home for the next 10 days. Following your safety briefing you will meet your fellow photographic passengers and sail north past the island of Prins Karl Forland, looking out from the bow or bridge for whales and Arctic birds. Already, the fjordland views are incredible and there is so much more to come.

Overnight: M/S Freya D

Days 2-10

Photographing Svalbard

Spend the next nine days aboard the M/S Freya discovering the Svalbard Archipelago and photographing its sights and wildlife. Seek out a plethora of Arctic species, glacial shelves and remote islands, all of which require different photographic techniques to capture on camera. In the evenings – time and sightings dependent – you will enjoy informative lectures from photographic leaders Taylor Rees and Renan Ozturk, while also learning about the geology, history and culture of the area from your expedition guides. Each departure in Svalbard is likely to be slightly different as the routing depends on weather conditions, the density of the pack ice and wildlife sightings. Throughout your Arctic safari you may encounter polar bears both roaming the pack ice and lazing on shore; breathtaking bird cliffs with so much dynamic behaviour you won't know where to point your camera; pods of whales swimming alongside your ship; or walrus and seals poking their heads up beside you in your Zodiac. On Day 10 of your safari you will head back to Longyearbyen and enjoy a Captain's dinner on board before reaching the dock.

Overnight: M/S Freya B, L, D

Day 11

Depart Longyearbyen

Waking in Longyearbyen, you will say goodbye to your expedition team and fellow passengers before disembarking from the ship. You may have time to pick up some last-minute souvenirs from this unique town before you begin your journey home.

INFORMATION

This is a small group photographic expedition, so an interest in wildlife photography is beneficial. The M/S Freya is an intimate 16-passenger ship that allows exploration of Svalbard's icy shores. Its small size ensures close proximity to wildlife, while the on-board Zodiacs allow access to areas of interest that are more difficult to reach by ship.
