Day by day

Day 1

Today you arrive into Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s capital. On arrival, transfer by shuttle bus to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore this enchanting Arctic town.

Overnight: Basecamp Hotel

Day 2

Longyearbyen - Isfjord Radio

This morning is to be spent at leisure to explore Longyearbyen. This afternoon you will be met at your hotel and transferred to the Isfjord Ekspress. Once on board, we head out into Isfjorden with a steady course westward.

There is time for a walk of the station where you can learn more about the fascinating history of this unique destination. Enjoy your spare time in the afternoon by exploring the library, warm up in the sauna or simply appreciate the incredible views. A 5-course dinner is served later in the evening.

Overnight: Isfjord Radio (B, D)

Day 3

Alkhornet Safari – Return to Longyearbyen

After a good night’s sleep, you will wake up to a view you will remember forever. Enjoy your morning coffee or tea with a panoramic view of Cape Linné bird sanctuary. After breakfast, we embark on our open RIB boat safari on the north side of Isfjorden. Our destinations are Trygghamna and Ymerbukta.

Historically, Trygghamna is a known as a sheltered bay. This is where seamen found rest after a rough sailing in the Arctic seas. Towering above Trygghamna is a horn-shaped mountain, Alkhornet, covered in guillemots and kittiwakes and surrounded by a lush and beautiful landscape. We continue our cruise to Ymerbukta, where the scenic Esmark glacier dives into the bay. As we float between small icebergs in the green glacial water you will be able to hear the ice crackle. Time for a picnic lunch and warm drinks before heading back to Isfjord Radio and your return to Longyearbyen

Check back into the Basecamp Hotel and enjoy an evening in Svalbard.

Overnight: Basecamp Hotel (B, L)

Day 4

Arctic Fox Photography – half day

Today is the day for Arctic foxes. After breakfast, we meet our photography guide, an experienced nature photographer, and head out in search of some local wildlife in the shape of Arctic fox, Svalbard rock ptarmigan, Svalbard Reindeer and Little Auk. The focus will depend on the season and which species are in the area at the time, and we will seek out the best lighting conditions and experiences on the day.

We move between different locations, by car and carry out stops and walk from a few hundred meters up to 1km. From mid July to August, the Arctic fox can be harder to find, spot and photograph because they have fox kits and there is good access to food so they don’t have to be out and about looking for food so often. Normally we still have success though! During this time, there will be more of a focus on the birdlife, both on the bird cliffs and on the tundra.

Overnight: Basecamp Hotel (B)

Day 5

Nordenskiöld Lodge

After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your guide at 8am in your hotel reception. You will be given a safety and information briefing about the safari for the next few days. After the briefing, get ready to head out on a RIB to Billefjorden and Adolfbukta. Expect lots of fresh air, sea spray and close encounters with the Arctic wildlife of Svalbard. The fjords are teeming with Arctic birds, walruses and seals in the Summer, and you will most likely encounter the devoted boat-followers known as northern fulmars, as well as the occasional puffin.

Hidden in the glacier moraine, Nordenskiöld Lodge is hard to spot even for the initiated few who knows its sheltered location. Once there, we will enjoy an outdoor lunch and get familiar with the cabin and the surroundings.

After lunch it is time to head out into the arctic nature and explore the beauty of the isolated outpost. We return to the cabin in the evening, where you will be served a delicious dinner and get to enjoy a pre-heated sauna.

Overnight: Nordenskiöld Lodge (B, L, D)

Day 6

Nordenskiöld Lodge - Kayaking

The day begins with a solid breakfast, before leaving the comforts of the Nordenskiold Lodge. We zip up our dry suits and slide into the calm water in steady and reliable double kayaks. We paddle in pairs. Kayaking is the perfect way to get around in the Arctic and is probably the ultimate way to explore a calving glacier front and the arctic shorelines. Today’s destination will be determined by the weather and sea conditions, as well as your paddling skill level. We will paddle next to the magnificent glacier front among floating pieces of glacier ice, while being observed by the curious wildlife.

After a long day of paddling in a cold, arctic sea, the comforts of a warm sauna and a proper meal will seem very tempting.

Overnight: Nordenskiöld Lodge (B, L D)

Day 7

Nordenskiöld Lodge - Glacier Hiking

Today we will head out to the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier. After breakfast, we will go through the basic guidelines and safety precautions associated with glacier hiking. We will set out to explore the heavily crevassed glacier that is situated only 300 meters from the cabin. We spend the day hiking up and down the glacier, staring down cracks and enjoying the shiny glacier surface. We will eat expedition lunch on the glacier. There are few more beautiful places in the world to enjoy an outdoor expedition lunch. The view of Adolfbukta and Billefjorden is nothing short of spectacular.

If the weather is nice, we will make a bonfire once back at the cabin, and simply cherish the view of the fjord.

Overnight: Nordenskiöld Lodge (B, L D)

Day 8

Nordenskiöld Lodge - Mountain Hiking

Today we strap on our hiking boots and start the hike to some of the surrounding mountain/moraine peaks. We will explore the beautiful Arctic landscape, glacier moraines and arctic flowers that have adapted to the harsh environment. We will summit one of the nearby mountain peaks and enjoy expedition lunch on the way. Once back at the cabin we will enjoy a delicious meal and the pre-heated sauna.

Overnight: Nordenskiöld Lodge (B, L D)

Day 9

Depart Nordenskiöld Lodge to Longyearbyen, via Pyramiden

After breakfast, we head out for a final hike and a last glimpse at the spectacular scenery. We have lunch at the lodge before returning to civilisation. On the way, we stop at the abandoned Russian mining town, Pyramiden. In the old days before the evacuation, they had kindergartens, schools and even the world’s northernmost swimming pool. The Russians took nothing with them when they abandoned the city in 1998 and almost everything remains as it was back then.

We arrive back in to Longyearbyen in the late afternoon, in time for a relaxing evening in Longyearbyen.

Overnight: Basecamp Hotel (B, L )

Day 10

Walrus colony, Prins Karls Forland Island

Today is our chance to visit a walrus colony. After breakfast, we join our boat to Prins Karls Forland Island, located between Isfjorden and Kongsfjorden. As we arrive at the walrus site, we will enjoy a warm lunch. If the weather permits, we will go ashore. If we have time for another stop on our way back to Longyearbyen, we will stop at one of the many glacier fronts dipping into Isfjorden.

On return to Longyearbyen, enjoy the evening at your own leisure.

Overnight: Basecamp Hotel (B, L )

Day 11
