Indian Ocean

Indian Ocean in December

December weather and when to go

The islands of the Indian Ocean are a fantastic place to spend Christmas and New Year. Although you won’t get the winter chill, mulled wine round the fire and turkey and all the trimmings, it is sure to be a Christmas to remember! As it is such a popular place to travel at this time, lodges and hotels can be busy and prices will be notably higher over the festive period. The focus of the peak season is specifically from the middle of December onwards though, so you may get cheaper prices if you choose to travel at the beginning of the month.

It is the start of hottest period in Seychelles so is great for sunbathing but you should be careful when travelling with small children and those sensitive to heat and sun.

December in the Maldives is absolutely stunning and it is one of the best times to avoid the monsoon season.

Hammerhead sharks will be present around the islands as well as a number of other key marine species so snorkelling and diving at this time will be full of excitement.

Mauritius is particularly busy during December and temperatures can be high. Heavy rain showers are likely but help reduce humidity so are welcome in the afternoons when temperatures can be particularly hot. Water visibility is good at this time so Mauritius is great for diving too.

One of the Indian Ocean islands that is somewhat off-limits throughout December is Reunion. It is the rainy summer season in Reunion and subject to hurricanes so it is not the best month for exploring this stunning island.
