Day 1

Oct 2: Arrive Cuiabá – SouthWild Pantanal Lodge

Today the adventure begins! You will be met by your guide at Cuiabá Airport. Once every group member has arrived and you've enjoyed a leisurely lunch, you will depart Cuiabá by 2:30pm (please make sure you arrive no later than 2pm) for your transfer (approx. 3 hours) to SouthWild Pantanal Lodge. You will then travel along the Transpantaneira Highway, a 145-kilometre-long dirt road that leads south through the heart of the Pantanal, ending at the Cuiabá River in Porto Jofre. As you enter the Transpantaneira Highway you start to see families of capybara, pools of caiman, raptors and flocks of waterbirds. Arrive at your lodge between 5pm and 7pm (depending on how often you stop for photos) in time for dinner with Pie Aerts, who will be your expert photographic guide for the next week. After dinner, head to the nearby ocelot hide for a chance to photograph this elusive wildcat up close.

Overnight: Southwild Pantanal (L, D)

Day 2

Oct 3: Jaguar Research Centre Reserve

During your breakfast, observe the abundant fauna around the nearby river, including caiman, capybara and jabiru stork. Depart at 7am in a roofed and open-sided safari truck towards the end of the road at Porto Jofre. Embark on speedboats for a 13km upstream journey to the Jaguar Research Centre Reserve where you will be greeted with lunch. Afterwards, Pie will guide you photographically as you spend the afternoon on a 4-hour boat outing searching for jaguars and the perfect wildlife shot. Return to your accommodation and then relax before dinner. This evening you will learn more about the area with an informative lecture.

Overnight: Southwild Jaguar Flotel (B, L, D)

Days 3-5

Oct 4-6: Jaguar Viewing

Spend the next three days searching for jaguars and giant otters on the Three Brothers, Cuiabá and Piquiri Rivers. Led by your expert photographer, Pie Aerts, enjoy two boat outings per day and then return to the lodge for lunch. Jaguars are often seen during the heat of the day sunning themselves on the riverbanks. This is the best place in the world to see these elusive big cats in the wild. Following your excursions, you will head back to the Flotel where you will be able to relax, edit some photos and discuss your images with Pie, in the hopes of improving your shots each day.

Overnight: Southwild Jaguar Flotel (B, L, D)

Day 6

Oct 7: Jaguar Viewing Area – Northern Pantanal

This morning after breakfast, you will transfer 13km back downriver to Porto Jofre. On arrival, you will be transferred back north along the Transpantaneira Highway in a closed air-conditioned vehicle. After lunch at SouthWild Pantanal Lodge, you will be taken out by your guides by safari truck or boat in an attempt to capture a few final shots to complete your portfolio of Pantanal images. This is the last chance to put into practice all that you have learned from Pie throughout your trip, before relaxing for a final dinner with your group and a night safari with a chance to spot tapir, anteater, fox, deer and more.
