From watching tango on the streets of Buenos Aires to setting foot in the wilds of Patagonia, this trip offers an enchanting snapshot of Argentina packed full of exciting excursions. Five nights in the capital city allows for cultural activities aplenty, while the winelands of Mendoza offer no shortage of drinking opportunities for the oenologically minded. You'll have earned those tipples following a trip to Argentinian Patagonia which may include hiking, horseback riding, jeep trips into the wilderness and much more.
Today you’ll arrive in Buenos Aires. After being met and transferred to your hotel, you have the rest of the day to spend on your own as you get to know the soulful birthplace of tango: Buenos Aires. The architecture, shady plazas and green open spaces of this iconic city leave visitors feeling that they are in Europe and not South America; it’s little wonder Buenos Aires is often dubbed the 'Paris of the Americas'.
This morning you will be given a guided tour of Argentina's beautiful capital city. Marvel at the vibrantly coloured clapper-board houses at La Boca, the district where the original European immigrants first settled. Recoleta Cemetery is where many famous Argentinians are buried, including a number of politicians, writers and former military leaders – arguably the most famous of which is Eva Perón. Back in the centre we will show you the President's Palace, the Congress Building and the Colón Theatre, all of which exude grandeur. The afternoon is yours to spend at leisure, perhaps strolling through the quirky antique district of San Telmo, before being taken to Esquina Carlos Gardel in the evening for a live tango show that is sure to impress, situated on the very corner where Carlos Gardel would dance the tango with his friends and contemporaries.
The next two days are yours to spend at leisure. You may want to enjoy the café culture of this cosmopolitan city, and indulge in a real Argentinian steak with a bottle of Malbec…
Today you'll leave Buenos Aires and catch a flight to one of Argentinian Patagonia’s bases for exploration: El Calafate. After being met and transferred to your hotel about 50 minutes away, you have the rest of the day to spend at your own leisure. Bikes and the use of walking trails are included in your stay here, so be sure to make the most of the stunning landscapes that surround you. There is also an array of activities available for you to book directly with your hotel, such as glacier tours, horseback riding, jeep excursions and more…
Overnight: Eolo Lodge (B, L, D)
After an early-morning breakfast and bus journey from your hotel, you will be treated to the incredible sight of the towering 60-metre-high walls of the Perito Moreno Glacier. This excursion takes you on a cruise across Lake Rico, reaching the Iceberg Channel, where your boat will stop at a safe distance from the glacier, continuing to sail across all its face, allowing you a spectacular view of the imposing wall of ice. This is a unique opportunity for photographers and nature-lovers alike. After the boat ride, you'll continue to the footbridges area of the lake and have a break to soak up the astounding surroundings. The bridges provide another interesting perspective on the glacier, and also allow you to hear the powerful cracks in this living mass of ice. You’ll then return to your lodge in time for dinner.
Overnight: Eolo Lodge (B, L, D)
Today is free for you to explore the area on your terms. Feel free to be lazy at your beautiful lodge, book further excursions or venture into El Calafate and enjoy the many cafés and restaurants there.
Overnight: Eolo Lodge (B, L, D)
After breakfast, you will catch an onward flight to Mendoza, Argentina's wine-producing capital. Mendoza is in another area of stunning beauty, with some high-altitude vineyards on the high plains east of the Andes, which loom majestically in the distance. Mendoza not only produces wine, but also a variety of other produce, including olive oil and fruits. Many local producers often sell their wares at the city's evening markets, which take place in one of the city's five symmetrical plazas. Once met at the airport, you will be transferred to your stunning vineyard accommodation.
Overnight: Cavas Wine Lodge (B, L, D)
Over the next three days, why not spend time visiting some of Mendoza's most important wineries, starting in the wine-growing area of Lujan de Cuyo, the home of Malbec, where some of the most prestigious Argentine wineries are located. Catena Zapata, Chandon, Caelum, Ruca Malen, Chakana, Norton and Terrazas are just a few of the producers you can visit. Just ask the lodge directly to arrange these visits for you. Lunch or dinner each day will be included at the on-site Cavas Restaurant. Your stay here also includes access to the pool, jacuzzi and fitness centre, while optional activities include white-water rafting, horseback riding or a round of golf that can be booked and paid for locally.
