A Bit About Me

I'm in charge of all the Polar products here at NWS, as well as overseeing the North, Central, and South America products (alongside Tristan)! I moved out of sales in 2018 to focus more on developing and running trips to the ends of the earth, but I still oversee the Polar/Americas team as a Sales Team Leader too. I spend my days chatting to our expert expedition teams and hiring new staff, planning itineraries, training on destinations and ships, and making sure everything runs smoothly for our clients on the ground.

I left Europe for the first time when I was 20, and I was well and truly infected with the travel bug as soon as I landed in New York City. Since then, I've seen most of Europe, all of the Caribbean, and the majority of the Americas, and of course the polar regions! I love cold snowy places, and anywhere that is untamed and wild, although I have to confess to loving the hustle and bustle of big cities too. I try to travel whenever I can, even if it’s just a weekend city break in Europe to climb a mountain somewhere or a road trip somewhere new in England I've never been.

Q & A With Lorna

Where was your last trip?

With NWS, my last trip was Antarctica. In my own time, I last visited Austria where I spent several days at the top of snowy mountains.

Where is your next trip?

I hope Greenland! Other than that, I’d love to visit Myanmar.

What is your first travel-related memory?

I didn't leave Europe until I was 20, so my first travel memories are of family holidays around the UK. My earliest memory is of walking along the beach in the Orkney Islands looking for groatie buckies (cowrie shells).

Aisle or window seat?

Aisle seat on long haul flights, window seat on short flights! I have to be able to walk around if the flight is more than 4 hours.

Do you have any travel habits or rituals?

Not really! I generally buy a new paperback book at the airport before a long flight in case the batteries run out on my iPad, but I'm not sure that counts as a ritual?

What are you most likely to splurge on while travelling?

If I'm travelling for a long time, I tend to splurge one night on the fanciest hotel I can find before I come home, usually one with a spa so I come home relaxed!

What’s your favourite thing about working at NWS?

The crazy bunch of travel addicts I get to work with every day! A very close second has to be chatting to our travellers when they come back from their trips and tell us stories of all the wildlife they saw. It’s even better when they send us blogs and photos! Experiencing a place all over again through our travellers' stories makes this job spectacular.

What do you like doing outside of NWS?

I read a lot of books, and plan a lot of fantasy trips (for when I win the lottery), I also love to swim and take photographs.

If you could do just one NWS safari, which one would it be?

I’d love to go to Greenland, so our small ship expedition on the M/S Freya this summer would be at the top of my list.

Is there a standout destination in your mind?

My favourite destinations are Antarctica and the Arctic. It's impossible for me to pick one over the other.

What is your best or worst travel souvenir?

I don't buy many souvenirs when I travel, but I always buy postcards. I plan to one day wallpaper a wall in my house with them, so its like a mosaic of all the places I have been.

What is the best or worst travel advice you have received?

I was once told I shouldn't travel alone.... terrible advice!! I've been to so many countries by myself, and I love traveling solo!

What is your spirit animal?

Probably a cat of some kind. I’m happy with my own company and enjoy roaming and exploring, or just sitting and observing. I’d love to say something cool like a jaguar, but I feel like a domestic cat is more accurate!
