A Bit About Me

A Bit About Me

Here at NWS I am one of the Arctic specialists and my job is to send people on once-in-a-lifetime trips to see polar bears! Sending people up to the High Arctic and to some of the most remote places in the world makes work much more fun than it should be! I first got bitten by the travel bug when I was 18. I went to university for a month and decided I needed to take a year out to rethink my plans. This then lead to my first 'backpacking' experience; a stint interrailing around Europe. After that I just kept on exploring. In 2016 I took six months off work and headed to Australia for two months, followed by four months in S.E. Asia. This is where my obsession with Asia began!

Q & A With Alice

Where have you travelled to in the last 12 months?

New Zealand, Berlin, Budapest, Sri Lanka, India, Italy, Marbella, Jordan and Istanbul.

Where are you planning to travel in the next 12 months?

Berlin and New York in January, Copenhagen for Easter, Svalbard with NWS in May, Dubrovnik and Montenegro in September and ending the year in New Zealand.

What is your first travel-related memory?

My grandparents used to own two cottages in Kerherve in France. So my first travel memory is getting an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Brittany and then driving to Kerherve. I remember my brother and I being so confused when we were able to pick up English TV from the Channel Islands, it was definitely a home from home.

Aisle or window seat?

Always the window seat! I cannot get comfy if I don't have the window to lean on.

Do you have any travel habits or rituals?

I always check out the types of food that a particular country is known for before I travel there. I also like to have a quick look up on the culture and customs, you never want to offend any locals!

What are you most likely to splurge on while travelling?

FOOD! In my opinion food is the easiest way to get to know a country.

What’s your favourite thing about working at NWS?

Getting to work around wildlife and travel every day is just the best!

What do you like doing outside of NWS?

I like to read, watch movies, hang out with friends and check out the abundance of bars and restaurants we have in Brighton. Oh, and of course travel!

If you could do just one NWS safari, which one would it be?

Our Narwhal and Polar Bear Safari

Is there a standout destination in your mind?

India! I adore India; the food, the people, the noise, the hustle and bustle, the culture. It is a country that has it all!

What is your best travel souvenir?

A canvas of elephants that I got from a small art shop in Unawatuna, Sri Lanka. The shop was family run, one brother painted/drew while the other one ran the shop.

What is the best travel advice you have received?

Always interact with the locals! They have the best advice after all... try and eat where the locals do, it usually ends up being the best food! Definitely use packing cubes! They are a life saver when travelling with a backpack.

What is your spirit animal?

According to the internet I am a cat; apparently I am adventurous, intrigued by everything and like to explore but also enjoy coming home for my creature comforts. Can't really disagree, I can only be away from Yorkshire Tea for so long!

What is your favourite thing about working in Brighton?

I love Brighton. It's probably the most common answer but can you really beat living by the sea?! I'm not sure it ever gets old!
