About Rancho Humo Estancia, Costa Rica

A luxury boutique hotel is probably at the bottom of the list of things you’d expect to find at the end of a bumpy 26km dirt road that winds its way through endless fields of cows, sugarcane and watermelon in the Costa Rican countryside, but this is the site of Rancho Humo Estancia, and the idyllic setting is well worth the drive. Made to feel perfectly at home by the traditional decoration and plush interior, you’ll feel perfectly at peace when sitting out on your balcony listening to the sound of birdsong as the sun sets over the verdant wetlands that surround the lodge.

Built up around the owner’s original hacienda, this eco-boutique hotel has been designed and decorated to evoke the natural beauty of the surrounding area and the sabanero ranching tradition of the Guanacaste region.

Situated right on the edge of Palo Verde National Park in the middle of a sprawling cattle ranch, this lodge offers fantastic views of the protected wetlands, mangroves and tropical forest beyond the Tempisque River that stretch as far as the eye can see. This makes Rancho Humo Estancia the perfect setting for wildlife-lovers seeking a peaceful getaway.

Accommodation & Facilities

Four types of en-suite room are available to book here, all with plush, modern amenities and spacious balconies that are perfect for taking in the quite stunning views of the wetlands and grassy plains beyond. Guests can choose between a standard room with either one or two double beds, a suite with a double bed or a family suite which has both a double bed and a sofa bed (ideal for the kids). Each room comes equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, cable television, a coffee maker and a safety deposit box. The outdoor pool is great for cooling off after a long day exploring Palo Verde National Park

The lodge’s on-site kitchen serves up the finest wines, delicious craft beer and gourmet dishes inspired by the local cuisine of Guanacaste, all made with fresh ingredients grown just outside in an organic garden. The relaxed and intimate restaurant has open terraces that allow you to enjoy glorious sunsets along with your meal.

Undoubtedly the number one activity here is the wealth of wildlife tours one can embark on. From sailing down the Tempisque River to riding through the wilderness on horseback, your dedicated guides will be able to provide expert information and help you spot some of Guanacaste’s most distinctive wildlife. Crocodiles are the region’s most fearsome residents, but look to the skies and you’ll see them filled with ibis, herons, egrets, macaws and, if you’re lucky, the largest bird native to Central America: the jabiru.
