Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Longyearbyen

Today the adventure begins! You will arrive into Longyearbyen and transfer to the ship. Set sail through Isfjorden and make the most of the beautiful views as you depart.

Day 2

Bourbonhamna

At this point, the real adventure begins, with itineraries and day by day plans changing with the weather, so bring your sense of adventure! Keep your eyes open for beluga whales as you sail towards Bourbonhamna, pick up some tips from the photographers on board as you spend time on deck looking out for wildlife. With shore landings planned for the day, look out for dozens of reindeer that inhabit the area.

Day 3

Lilliehook Glacier

Stretching almost seven kilometres across and at a height of almost 80 metres, you’ll be amazed at the sheer size of Lilliehook Glacier. Look out for bearded or ringed seals and increase your shutter speed so you can snap away as kittiwakes circle around you.

Day 4

Monaco Glacier

As you sail through Liefdefjorden, marvel at the beautiful Monaco Glacier. With superb hiking options, you’ll be able to stretch your legs as you keep a look out for polar bears hunting nearby.

Day 5

Phippsoya

Just 540 nautical miles from the North Pole, and often surrounded by pack ice, explore Phippsoya which is well known for polar bear viewings. Keep your binoculars ready to spot bears out hunting on the ice, and your cameras at the ready as bears are regularly seen around this area.

Day 6

Hinlopen Strait

Explore the beautiful Hinlopen Strait, with the magnificent Alkefjellet bird cliffs. Watch in wonder as 400,000 guillemots circle, dive and swoop around you as the zodiacs navigate along the cliff face. With beautiful hiking routes nearby, you’ll be amazed at the range of wildlife round in the area. If you’re lucky, you may even see the beautiful Arctic foxes hunting around the cliffs!

Day 7

Fuglesangenoya

Explore the nearby bird colonies, and wander around the old whaling stations, as you learn more about the history of the islands at the old whaling station of Smeerenburg. Take the time to review some of your photographs with the experts and pick up some processing tips for when you get home.

Day 8

Prince Charles Island

This is your opportunity to wonder at the curious behaviour of walruses as you approach them on the shore. Marvel as they splash through the water, or sleep on the beach. As the journey comes to an end, enjoy the Captains dinner and reflect on your journey through Svalbard.

Day 9

Svalbard - Depart

After breakfast, say your goodbyes, disembark the Academik Sergey Vavilov and begin your journey home.
