Swimming with Killer Whales - Skjervoy Land-based

Join us for a small group safari swimming alongside orcas and humpbacks whales in the Arctic waters off the Norwegian coast. Under the Arctic skies, you'll also have a chance to see the magical Northern Lights. With only 4 guests on the safari, you will be one of the very few people in the world who will get this close to the orcas in the wild. This trip will not follow an exact itinerary, but will instead be at the whim of the whales, who migrate here in the winter to feed on vast stocks of herring.

Based in Skjervoy, northern Norway, each day we will head out on our private boat in search of two of the sea's most recognisable residents: the orca, or killer whale, and the humpback whale. Your guide will be NWS specialist leader Joshua Barton who has travelled the globe in search of the largest creatures on the planet. Josh is an experienced underwater wildlife photographer who has crisscrossed the planet searching for unique moments to capture on camera. His work has featured worldwide in publications like National Geographic, the Washington Post and International Wildlife. Joshua’s clients from Natural World Safaris were the first non-professional photographers to capture transient orcas off the coast of Sri Lanka.

What makes this trip extraordinary

  • Swim alongside the immense killer whales.
  • Witness humpback whales breaching and hunting for herring
  • Enjoy the magical Northern Lights under the Arctic skies
  • Experience a magical Winter wonderland

Day by day

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Tromsø

Arrive at Tromso airport where you’ll be met by Josh. From there we’ll head a few hours north to Skjervoy where we will settle into our cabins and Josh can brief you on what lies ahead over the next week! The cabins have nice kitchens and we can cook our meals there. There are excellent grocery stores, a couple of small restaurants and a bar in Skjervoy.

Days 2-7

Whale Watching

Josh has been running these trips for a number of years; almost the entire time in which orcas have been found migrating to these waters. During your time here, you will board your private chartered boat with Josh and the expert captain, some of the most experienced people in the world with regards to finding the Killer Whales and humpbacks. The animals have come to Norway in order to hunt for herring, they can often be found in large groups known as pods. Your group will decide when you want to head back to dry land where you can enjoy dinner. Your evenings will be spent (hopefully) observing the Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis). If possible, we also have the opportunity to go dog-sledding one evening (at additional cost).

On the first day we will board our vessel and head out at 9am to let everyone test their gear and go through drysuit swimming practicalities and acclimatisation. On other days we will head out from the harbour at 10am; most often we find orca within 5km of Skjervoy, but if they are further afield we will modify plans to leave earlier.

Day 8

Depart Tromsø

Today we will head back to Tromso airport for your onward journey.

TRIP DETAILS

This is a small group safari for 4 guests only, departing on 13-20 November 2021.

Our accommodation is at the Skjervoy Fishing Camp on the island of Skjervoy. The camp is in a secluded cove (10 mins from the centre of the small village) and each cabin has 2 bedrooms and sleeps up to 4 guests. Cabins are simple and comfortable and they all have a private bathroom, fully-equipped kitchen and a terrace with a view!

You can pre-arrange to hire a dry suit in Tromso (approximately £115 for the week). If you plan to do so, we recommend arriving into Tromso a day early in order to pick this up. Please contact your Destination Specialist if you would like to arrange an additional night’s accommodation in Tromso.

We get on the boat in our gear - we are in our gear the whole day, albeit they are short days due to the daylight hours at this time of year.

If you would like to arrange your own private safari for 4 guests, please contact your Destination Specialist.
