Explore a remote part of the Arctic which very few people ever get to see. Sail through dramatic landscapes and look out for polar bears, narwhals, belugas and the endangered bowhead whale. Witness immense glacial systems, visit historic Royal Canadian Mounted Police outposts, and visit the final resting place of some of the men from the Ill-fated Franklin Expedition in 1945-46.

Day by day

Day 1

Ottawa - Iqaliut

From Ottawa, jump on a scheduled flight to Iqaluit, Baffin Island. Enjoy a walking tour of the town before embarking the Akademik Ioffe in the afternoon. Enjoy a welcome drink as you set sail to one of the most remote places on earth.

Day 2

Monumental Island

Situated in the Davis Strait, Monumental Island is a well-known location for walrus. We explore by zodiac along the shoreline looking for these fascinating creatures. This is also a popular area for polar bears, so keep your eyes open for the majestic king of the Arctic.

Day 3


In the heart of Cumberland Sound the small village of Pangnirtung lies between the mountains and the sea. Explore the visitor centre with its beautiful displays that will guide you through the history of the Thule and modern Inuit, and marvel at the picture perfect scenery.

Day 4

Sunshine Fjord

Awaken to the beautiful Sunshine Fjord and spectacular scenery. Today is the day to enjoy a hike, whether it’s a longer route to lookout points where the views are breathtaking, or a more relaxed walk along the shore. Depending on weather conditions, you’ll have the opportunity to cross the Arctic Circle either by foot, Zodiac or ship – whichever way you do it, you’ll have bragging rights for life.

Day 5


One of Canada’s most stunning national parks, Auyuittuq is dominated by steep rugged mountain scenery, with extensive glacial systems and rivers. You will venture into the park with skilled local guides, and become one of the few lucky visitors each season to explore this part of the world. Visit Qikiqtarjuaq a small settlement home to several Inuit families to learn more about their way of life up here in the high Arctic.

Day 6

Niginganiq (Isabella Bay)

Today is the day for bowhead whales, who frequent these waters in the summer. Keep your eyes open and binoculars ready to spot these elusive creatures in the clear waters. This area is also home to a number of polar bears, ringed seals, Canada and snow geese, plus a few narwhals, so you’ll be snapping away on your camera all day.

Day 7

Gibbs Fjord

This is your opportunity to catch up on some photo editing or relax with a good book as the ship sails through the beautiful Gibbs Fjord between snowy glaciers and towering mountain peaks.

Day 8

Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet)

Today the ship approaches the far north of Baffin Island, home to the remote community of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet). Highlights of the day include the Natinnak Centres cultural exhibit, and Sirmilik National Park with its large colonies of seabirds.

Day 9

Devon Island

This morning you’ll leave the wild landscapes of Baffin Island and cross Lancaster Sound towards Devon Island. Waters from the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans meet here, creating a rich source of nutrients for Arctic wildlife who are here in abundance. You will visit the Royal Canadian Mounted Police outpost at Dundas Harbour, and view glaciers in Crocker bay.

Day 10

Prince Leopold Island

Today is a day for birds, with Prince Leopold Island, an important migratory bird sanctuary, playing host to thick-billed murres, black guillemots, northern fulmars and black-legged kittiwakes. With several hundred thousand birds in the area, you won’t be short of photography opportunities. If you are lucky, you may also see some of the beluga, narwhal and bowhead whales in the area, as well as the polar bears that have been spotted here in the past.

Day 11

Beechey Island

As the adventure comes to a close, enjoy a final shore landing at Beechey Island, the place where Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated expedition spent its last winter before vanishing into the icy wilderness. After a day ashore, enjoy the Captain's farewell dinner as you reflect on the wildlife and scenery you’ve enjoyed throughout the trip.

Day 12

Depart Edmonton

After breakfast, depart the ship in Resolute and take the chartered flight to Edmonton. You’ll be transferred from the airport to a central downtown location where your journey ends upon arrival.
