Safari Overview

The grizzly bear is one of the most instantly recognisable animals on the planet. Both charismatic and fearsome, these massive mammals are found across Alaska, but the remote wildernesses that you’ll be visiting in this safari are favourite haunts of this apex predator. Visiting three lodges across southcentral Alaska, all of which are situated close to waterways that provide grizzlies with their staple summer food of salmon, you’ll be able to watch the bears from boats, kayaks and on foot. In addition, you can soak in the remarkable forests and mountains that are found throughout the state, as well as spot Alaska’s birdlife and marine life.

What makes this trip extraordinary

  • Explore Katmai National Park by boat and on foot.
  • Potentially see grizzly bears gathering in massive numbers.
  • Kayak across clear, still lakes in search of bears fishing for salmon.
  • Spend time in the seldom-frequented Port Fidalgo Inlet, home to whales, bears and more.

See the iconic grizzly bear converge on the waterways of America's most wild and picturesque state, Alaska.

Day by day

Day 1

Anchorage – Redoubt Bay

This morning you’ll transfer from Anchorage International Airport to the city’s Lake Hood Seaplane Base. From here you’ll board a floatplane and take a scenic flight to the remote Redoubt Bay Lodge, which will be your home for the next three days. As the lodge is the only accommodation within a 171,000-acre critical habitat area, you’ll get to experience the true wilderness and natural beauty that is quintessentially Alaska. Upon arrival, you’ll embark on a guided wildlife tour in search of bears and the other wildlife that frequents the area, including eagles and other birdlife.

Days 2-3

Redoubt Bay

Over the coming days you can experience the best that this wild region has to offer, following programs that the lodge’s staff will tailor to your specific interests. A number of guided wildlife-viewing activities are on offer, and you’ll be able to explore the area by foot, boat, skiff or kayak. July is the best month for bear viewing, when both black and grizzly bears will descend on the nearby lakes and rivers to fish for salmon. Your trained guide will know and when to find the best wildlife sightings within this untamed region.

Day 4

Redoubt Bay – Anchorage – Kodiak

Soak in the last few hours at the lodge before departing via floatplane for Anchorage, where you’ll transfer to Anchorage International Airport for your onward flight to Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska. You can then check in to your hotel for the night, overlooking the town of Kodiak’s St. Paul Harbour.

Overnight: Best Western Kodiak Inn B, L, D

Day 5

Kodiak – Katmai National Park

Today you’ll travel from Kodiak to Katmai National Park, where you’ll be met by our local representative and transferred to the Katmai Wilderness Lodge, where you can settle in and enjoy a quick lunch before departing for your first wildlife-viewing excursion in the park. The lodge itself is located right next to the waters of Kukiak Bay, making it the perfect starting-off point for boat tours, like the one you’ll be embarking on today. Katmai National Park boasts one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in the world, and the resident grizzlies are most active here in August, during the annual salmon run.

Days 6-7

Katmai National Park

For the next two days you’ll depart the lodge on landing craft boats in search of unique and interesting wildlife experiences and photographic opportunities. Whenever possible your guide will park the boat along the shoreline, allow you to disembark, and explore the fields and forests for wildlife. The boats are equipped with bow ramps that lower onto the beach and allow for easy on-and-off access. They also have enclosed cabins, large decks, and marine toilets for use while out and away from the lodge. Keep your camera with you as there are sure to be plenty of bears in the area! As evening arrives, your boat will turn around and drop you back at the main lodge, where you can watch the sunset illuminate the mountains.

Day 8

Katmai National Park – Anchorage – Port Fidalgo

After three days of bear-watching in the Katmai wilderness, your time at the lodge has come to an end, and the first leg of today’s journey involves transferring back to Kodiak via floatplane. From here you’ll fly to Anchorage and then connect with your flight to the city of Valdez, travelling over the rugged landscape of Chugach State Park. Upon landing in Valdez, make your way to the harbour and catch a boat to Ravencroft Lodge in the Port Fidalgo Inlet, on the eastern edge of Prince William Sound. Settle into your room and treat yourself to a late dinner before your adventure begins the following morning.

Days 9-10

Port Fidalgo

The wonderfully isolated Ravencroft Lodge sits beside the Port Fidalgo Inlet, offering calm waters and beautiful views for its guests. Here you’ll be able to see both grizzly bears and black bears striding across the inlet’s narrow beaches beneath mountainous vistas, but they aren’t the only wildlife you’ll be able to spot here. The area is also home to 220 species of bird, 30 species of land mammal and at least a dozen marine mammal species. Keep an eye out for bald eagles perching on treetops and puffins nesting on rocky outcrops.

Day 11

Port Fidalgo – Depart Anchorage

Make the most of your last day here in this remote wilderness and go in search of bears, whales, eagles and the rest of the wildlife that calls this place home. Afterwards you’ll leave Ravencroft Lodge and travel back to Valdez, then onwards to Anchorage via a short flight before connecting with your international flight home.
