On this trip you will have an incredible 9 days to delve deep into the wetlands of the Pantanal - the largest wetland area in the world, in search of the elusive jaguar. Maximising your chances of seeing as much as possible we incorporate night drives, jungle treks, river boat safaris and horse riding all into your trip. The focus of this trip is to succeed in seeing the elusive jaguar in its natural habitat, and if we do not succeed, you can be safe in the knowledge that there is still plenty else to see in this wonderful area of Brazil.

Day by day

Day 1

Cuiaba - Northern Pantanal

Following your arrival into Cuiaba you will be met at the airport by your guide who will transfer you to Caceres and onwards to Taiama Ecological Reserve where you will board the intimate Jaguar House Boat. It is situated along the north side of Taiama Island along the Paraguay River; you will have time to settle in and relax on your first evening.

Days 2-3

Taima Ecological Reserve

You have two full days to enjoy boat excursions into the Taiama Ecological Reserve and its channels in search of jaguars and other incredible wildlife. This is one of the best areas to see jaguars away from the crowds. They are a little shier here, but your group will probably be on your own if you come across any of these large elusive cats. This is our favourite area of the whole Pantanal with plenty of birds, caiman and capybaras to spot!

Day 4

Taima Reserve - Northern Pantanal

This morning you will transfer north via Caceres to Pocone where you join the Transpantaneira Highway onwards to Araras Lodge. Along this 145 kilometre long dirt road that leads through the heart of the Pantanal, ending at the Cuiaba River in Jofre, you may see families of capybaras, pools of caiman and flocks of water birds and raptor – so be sure to keep your eyes peeled! An eco-lodge immersed in the tropical wetland eco-system of the northern Pantanal, you’ll arrive at Araras Lodge – a great base for exploring the Pantanal’s wild north. Relax this evening before your activities in the morning.

Days 5-6

Northern Pantanal

With two full days to explore the region, you will enjoy a variety of excursions accompanied by an expert naturalist guide, setting out into the wild wetlands of the Pantanal. Explore the waterways with a canoe, try piranha fishing, or ride horseback past the giant lily-pads of the wetlands. This is a great way to get off-road and head deeper into the marshes, forests and grasslands in search of the animals. Come into close contact with the resident flora and fauna on a walk, enjoy a jeep safari to get some fabulous photos or head out at night with a spotlight to see some of the nocturnal species of the area. Each evening you will gather and decide what you want to do the next day and learn about the local culture and wildlife.

Day 7

Northern Pantanal - Porto Jofre

After breakfast your adventure continues south down the Transpantaneira Highway to Porto Jofre. En route you will have the chance to stop and enjoy the views whilst looking out for the resident wildlife. Arrive at your hotel and spend the evening relaxing and exploring the well-maintained grounds, which are often frequented by Hyacinth macaws and toco toucans.

Day 8

Porto Jofre

You will have the next two days to go in search of the jaguars that can be found in this area. From Jofre you will head out on boats in search of the jaguars. They are often seen during the heat of the day sunning themselves on the river banks. This is the best place in the world to see these elusive cats in the wild. Following your excursions you will head back to the hotel where you will be able to relax.

Day 9

Porto Jofre - Cuiaba

Today you will enjoy a delicious breakfast prior to making the journey to Cuiaba; in plenty of time for your onward flight.
