Set sail on a truly unforgettable journey to the Ring of Fire in Russia’s Far East. Board your vessel in the capital of the Kamchatka region, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, before heading out from what some people consider as the best natural harbour in the world. With a combination of numerous shore landings and zodiac excursions, you will gaze upon incredible rugged landscapes and distinctive wildlife, including sea otters, orcas, Stellar’s sea eagles, brown bears and more. From uncovering the spectacular marine life of the Pacific Ocean to searching for brown bears in dense cedar forests, the Kamchatka region of Russia is a new frontier for hikers, birders, photographers and adventurers alike.

Day 1

Arrive Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Welcome to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Today you will be transferred to the Spirit of Enderby where your journey begins. As you depart from the port, be sure to turn back and take advantage of the great birdwatching opportunities as you leave the shoreline behind.

Day 2

At Sea

As you cruise your way to the Commander Islands, today your time will be spent at sea as you prepare for the days ahead. This will also be a good time to head up on deck for some good birding, including some likely sightings of red-legged kittiwake and fork-tailed storm petrel.

Days 3-4

Commander Islands

The Commander Islands – comprised of Bering Island, Medny Island and a number of smaller islets – contain many sites to explore. Over the next couple of days, you will stand an excellent chance of spotting rock sandpipers and even the endemic subspecies of the Artic fox that makes its home here. Zodiac cruising will also give the opportunity to spot sperm whales, humpback whales, northern minke whales and orcas. Before departing the Commander Islands, enjoy a visit to the small settlement of Nikolskoye and the local museum.

Day 5

Zhupanova River, Kamchatka

Today you will spend several hours in the zodiacs cruising the beautiful Zhupanova River. Set your sights upon Steller’s sea eagles as they nest in the trees adjacent to the riverbank along with long-toed stints and the Far Eastern curlew.

Day 6

Bukta Russkaya Fjord, Kamchatka

Head deeper into the fjords of the Kamchatka Peninsula where you will have the chance to see the magnificent brown bear. On your journey into the Bukta Russkaya Fjord, be on the lookout for orcas and sea lions.

Day 7

Second Kuril Strait, Atlasova and Onekotan Islands

Early this morning you will pass through the Second Kuril Strait, which has one of the highest densities of sea otters in the Kuril Islands. Perfect for birders, Atlasova Island boasts many species to see; make the most of this destination before heading to Onekotan Island this evening. Enjoy a stunning walk through the fields of wildflowers as you make your way to Black Lake.

Day 8

Ekarma and Toporkovy Islands

Enjoy an early-morning cruise on the zodiacs as you arrive at Ekarma Island, where sightings may include the tufted puffin and whiskered auklet. This afternoon, head to Toporkovy Island, located in the shadow of the active Matua Island volcano.

Day 9

Simushir and Yankicha Islands

Today you will head to Simushir Island where a formerly top-secret Soviet submarine base lies abandoned. Be sure to be on the lookout for Siberian rubythroat, Eurasian nutcracker, pine grosbeak and Japanese grey bunting in the surrounding area. Next, set sail over to Yankicha Island where incredibly high numbers of auk flock here to breed, including concentrations of crested and whiskered auklets.

Day 10

Chirpoy and Urup Islands

Depending on the current weather, today you will either cruise via zodiac alongside, or land upon, Chirpoy Island. Here dramatic volcanic landscapes await, covered with breeding seabirds. This afternoon, stretch your legs on Urup Island on the search for birds and sea otters.

Day 11

Iturup Island

This morning you will arrive at the small settlement of Kurilsk. Hop on a local bus or truck which will take you into the volcanic highlands for a relaxing soak in thermal hot pools.

Day 12

Kunashir Island

The island of Kunashir is the largest of the Kuril chain. Upon landing in the Kurilsky Reserve, enjoy a morning of exploration within an extensive woodland where great walking trails and birding opportunities await.

Day 13

Sakhalin Island

Today you will dock at the Port of Korskov on Sakhalin Island, where after your final breakfast on board, it will be time to disembark the Spirit of Enderby. Transfers will be provided for your onward journey to a downtown hotel or to the airport.
