Safari Overview

Mana Pools National Park and the neighbouring Sapi Concession (along with the Chewore Safari Area) form one of Zimbabwe’s five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On this expedition, you’ll venture far into the bush to discover what makes this region so special. Enriched by the waters of the Zambezi, the lakes, floodplains and riverbanks here attract some of Africa’s largest fauna – in considerable numbers – making this one of the continent's most renowned game-viewing regions. Specially tailored for those seeking intrepid walking safaris and an authentic camping experience, the Greater Mana Expedition is ideal for travellers who wish to truly immerse themselves in the African wilderness.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Sapi Concession

The private Sapi Concession borders Mana Pools National Park, and you’ll arrive at the former today at the beginning of your Zimbabwean adventure. Your expedition team will meet you at the Chiwore Airstrip, before transferring you to the site of your first mobile camp. The road transfer will take approximately two hours, allowing for wildlife viewing en route.

Days 2-6

Sapi Concession & Mana Pools National Park

Your safari experience over the following five days will take place across 337,600 hectares of prime protected wilderness, comprising both the national park and the private concession. An estimated 80-85% of these areas are only traversable on foot, making them two of Africa's finest walking safari destinations. In addition, Mana Pools has been designated as a Ramsar Site, a wetland area of international importance that provides particularly crucial habitat for waterfowl. The park's name derives from the four large pools formed by the meanderings of the Zambezi River; these pools are home to Zimbabwe's highest concentrations of hippo and crocodile, but they also draw animals such as zebra, elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog and brown hyena. You'll be spending two nights each at three separate camps, approximately 20km from each other. The middle two nights will be spent on raised "starbeds" overlooking a spring line of the ephemeral Sapi River, while the first and last camps are explorer-style on the banks of the Zambezi. With just three tents/starbeds at each camp, you'll be assured a peaceful and intimate stay out in the bush. During the day you'll partake in boat and canoe outings, as well as game drives and the aforementioned walking safaris. Accompanied by the same professional guide throughout, the emphasis during this expedition will be on tracking, exploring, and reliving the thrill of discovery experienced by the African adventurers of yesteryear.

Day 7

Depart Sapi Concession

After six nights spent in one of Zimbabwe’s most wild and remote wilderness areas, the time has come for you to drive back to the airstrip and catch your flight back to civilisation. Speak to one of our Destination Specialists if you’d like to add an extension to Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park or another of our African destinations.
