Day by day

Day 1

Kigali - Volcanoes National Park

Upon your arrival into Kigali International Airport, you are met by your private professional English-speaking driver/guide and private 4x4 safari vehicle. This morning, you have the chance to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. This poignant and moving exhibition of the Rwandan genocide also tells the story of how the future can be lived in love, peace and harmony. After lunch, you travel north to Ruhengeri and the Volcanoes National Park. Home to some of the worlds few remaining mountain gorillas the mist covered peaks of the Volcanoes National Park are a 'true island in the sky'. It is here in 1959 that George Schaller first studied the gorillas and through the 1960's by Dian Fossey and her colleagues.

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking

Today you set off for one of the natural world's most intimate wildlife encounters - tracking and coming face to face with the world famous mountain gorillas of Rwanda. An early breakfast and you're off to the park headquarters at Kinigi to register and be allocated your gorilla family for today. The gorillas we are allowed to track belong to one of ten habituated family groups. Once this is done, you set out by vehicle to the start of your gorilla safari. Although habituated to human presence, the gorillas are by no means tame, and are completely wild animals. Experienced guides will accompany you on your gorilla tracking, many of whom have been involved in the habituation process themselves. The guides will use their knowledge of the gorillas' habits and information from the previous day to locate the group's whereabouts. Once you encounter the gorillas you are permitted to observe them for a maximum one hour.

Day 3

Optional Gorilla Trek, Golden Monkey, Dian Fossey Visit or Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project

Today you have a chance to either track the gorillas for a second time (highly recommended), head out in search of the golden monkeys, visit the remains of the Karisoke Research Centre where Dian Fossey worked, which includes a chance to visit the meadow of where her mountain hut used to be, with views of Bisoke, Karisimbi and Sabyinyo peaks. Or spend time with the Mountain Gorilla Vets and gain an insight into their practices. For those who wish to relax at the lodge and recuperate after the last days activities, then this is of course also an option! Afterwards you will be driven back to Kigali for overnight stay.

Unguja's location on this southern tip of the island offers pristine beaches and lush green surroundings. The building's organic forms and stylish finish are complemented perfectly by the lush tropical setting and the rough coral boulders that surround it. This is a lodge with personality; it reflects the warmth and vivacity of Ralph and Elies its creators, and hosts. Their attention to detail and their love of good living bring the place to life.

Days 5-9

Zanzibar at Unguja

Take this time to relax and enjoy the wonderful spice island of Zanzibar. The population of Zanzibar is culturally diverse, with some of the mixed African, Arabic and Indian population dating back to 1st Century AD and today welcomes a growing number of tourists with a sense of laidback hospitality and friendliness. Its rich history, culture and marine life ensure there is plenty to do if you feel active including snorkelling, sailing out to the local reef, kayaking, village visits, spice tours, visits to Stonetown, spa treatments, relaxing by the pool or diving. Enjoy sunbathing and exploring rock pools and look out for red colobus monkeys, hyrax and black tail monkeys in the surrounding baobab forest. A guided walk to the neighbouring fishing village of Kizimkazi is highly recommended. There is a PADI dive centre on site that offers personal and flexible dive expeditions in the Menai Bay Conservation Area with both shallow dies over beautiful coral gardens and deeper dives for the more experienced diver. You can book and pay for activities directly at the beach lodge.
