Safari Overview

This adventurous safari takes you to to the rugged mountains and dense forests of Virunga National Park on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, home to the critically endangered mountain gorilla. With under 900 mountain gorillas now remaining in the wild, Virunga has played a crucial role in the conservation and continued survival of the world’s largest primate. The park is also renowned for its incredible biodiversity, containing more bird, mammal and reptile species than any other national park in Africa, including forest elephants, chimpanzees and the elusive okapi. You will have two opportunities to track the gorillas in the park, spending time with these incredible animals as you observe them forage and play in their natural environment.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive Kigali - Lake Kivu

Today you will fly into Kigali, Rwanda, where you will be met by our local representative and transferred to the DRC border (approximately 4 hours drive), where you will be assisted with your visa and paperwork. Once in DRC, you will join your guide and transfer to your lodge on the scenic shores of Lake Kivu, where the rest of the day is yours to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Day 2

Lake Kivu - Virunga National Park

Today you will be transferred north to Rumangabo and check in to Mikeno Lodge, your home for the next few days. After your arrival, the rest of the day is at leisure; relax at your lodge or pay a visit to the gorilla orphans at the Sekwekwe Mountain Gorilla Centre, the only facility in the world that currently cares for orphaned mountain gorillas.

Days 3-4

Virunga National Park

Over the next two days, you will have two opportunities to track the mountain gorillas of Virunga National Park. Departing early from your lodge, enjoy a scenic drive through the local villages and surrounding countryside to Bukima, where you will have an introductory briefing before heading into the forest to trek the gorillas. After trekking through dense jungle, you will spend an hour with one of the eight habituated gorilla groups in the park; a real once-in-a-lifetime experience to observe these primates in their natural habitat. In the afternoons, you will return to Rumangabo where the rest of the day is yours to relax or enjoy one of the activities available at your lodge.

Day 5

Virunga National Park - Kigali

Today you will depart Virunga, making your way back to the border and crossing over into Rwanda, where you will be transferred to Kigali Airport for your international flight home. Alternatively, you may wish to extend your trip with a game safari in East Africa.

Please note that gorilla permits are not included in the price of this safari, which will cost an additional £580 for two permits.
