Camp in the foothills, meet the local community and hopefully be one of the few who actually catch a glimpse of these big cats in the wild.
Staying in the heart of the mountains you really are in the right place to track the snow leopards. Your specialist guide will teach you to read pugmarks, help you seek out tufts of fur and identify leopard kill spots for the best chances of snow leopard sightings.
Snow Leopard Trails are renowned for creating impressive adventure safaris to the remote region of Ladakh. They are experienced in working with the local community and always include a sense of culture in their wildlife safaris. This stunning region is difficult to reach so it is vital to use a knowledgeable operator on the ground who have experienced every eventuality and circumstance that nature could throw at them.
The Snow Leopard Trust was set up by Helen Freeman in 1981 and has been working tirelessly since then to protect this endangered big cat. From research programmes and community-based conservation projects, to global fundraisers and projects working in association with zoos, the foundation has not only raised money for the species but has also done a great deal for raising awareness of the plight of the snow leopard.
You will see whilst on your quest for the snow leopard, the work that goes in to conserving the region and educating the local communities about the importance of protecting this wild species, despite their sometimes damaging behaviour towards housing, livestock or crops.
