Under the stars
Sleeping under the stars in the African bush is incredibly romantic. With no barrier between you and the wilderness, enveloped in the silky-dark of night, your senses will be alert to the sounds of the world around you. Hear the distant roar of lions calling through the jungle at night along with the chorus of thousands of frogs.
Previously sleeping out in something as close to nature as a star bed was only available in Africa’s national parks by very basic camping, but this is no longer the case. Becoming increasingly popular, many camps and lodges are able to offer a variety of “sleep out” experiences that bring you closer to the environment without sacrificing the small comforts that you would associate with luxury lodges of this standard. What better way to add a bit of magic to a honeymoon or a special occasion than sleeping out under the stars in luxury style, such as at Wolwedans in Namibia (pictured top).
We were excited to hear that the lovely Savuti Camp (pictured below) in one of our favourite areas in Botswana have introduced a new sleep-out option for adventurous guests. Situated a 10 minute drive, or 20 minute boat trip away from the camp guests can sleep on an outdoor deck (pictured above) overlooking the wildlife-rich Savute Channel. Guests can sleep easy in comfortable beds with mosquito nets and basic bathroom facilities nearby with the security of knowing a guide is close at hand throughout the night to ensure safety.
Sleeping out under the stars offers the opportunity to engage in a world that remains in complete contrast to our urban daily lives. There is something magical about sleeping out underneath a star studded sky that is obscured from view for most of our lives.
Below is a small selection of our favourite “sleep out” experiences within the destinations that we offer around the world:
Ngare Serian - Kenya
Jamtara Wilderness Camp - India
Tswalu Kalahari – South Africa
Wolwedans – Namibia
