Kandy House

about the kandy house, kandy

The Kandy House, located on the eastern hills of town on a spice estate, is the carefully restored home of an aristocratic Sri Lankan family. Tastefully renovated to combine classic Kandyan period architecture with Dutch colonial furnishings, it uses white through out with little injections of colour and polished wooden floors, resulting in a fresh, elegant and soft feel.

The Kandy House was opened in 2005 as the regions first high end accommodation and still firmly holds that title. It is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of Kandy itself, but is just a short tuk tuk ride away.

Style

Beautifully renovated ‘Walauwa’ (ancestral mansion), styled as a small boutique hotel providing very private and stylish accommodation.

Setting

Being just a short ride away from the ancient lakeside city of Kandy, it is a great base to explore from. The setting is wonderfully natural and the local temple is just a short walk away through the local paddy fields. The infinity pool is ‘fringed’ by jungle giving it a slightly wild, but relaxed edge, perfect for sitting around and enjoying a sundowner at the end of your day.

Accommodation & Facilities

Kandy House is centred around a central 2 storey courtyard, with wonderful white arches and large shady verandas. The 8 rooms surrounding are all different, either ultra or deluxe – some with secret gardens, others with views of the pool or of the jungle. The 9th suite is at the end of the gardens.

Dining

The chefs combine traditional Sri Lankan delicacies with modern, international flavours to create some spectacular dishes. Produce is bought daily from the Kandy market and meals can be eaten on your private verada.

Activities

With almost 60 different types of tropical bird, bird watching is a must. There are yoga lessons and massage and the chance to learn some traditional Sri Lankan games, as well as playing cricket. The gardens are beautiful and well worth exploring; the nearby temple can be visited after just a quick walk through the local paddy fields.

If you wish to leave The Kandy House grounds to explore, Kandy is just a short ride away. There you will find markets, the botanical gardens and The Temple of the Tooth – believed to house the upper canine of Lord Buddha himself. The friendly English speaking staff can help you organise you day and transportation.
