This colonial-style hotel is the former residence of Edwards Barnes, Governor of Sri Lanka, who lived here from 1830 to 1850. A perfect example of Elizabethan architecture, the Grand Hotel is located in the hill county resort town of Nuwara Eliya, in an area of misty mountains, waterfalls and forested valleys.

The elegantly furnished rooms overlook award-winning gardens, and the hotel offers a choice of dining and bar areas.

Accommodation & Facilities

The Grand Hotel’s 156 rooms are elegantly furnished and overlook the magnificent and award winning floral gardens. Rooms in the new wing of the hotel overlook the golf course, whilst deluxe and standard rooms are equipped with piped music, heaters and well appointed bathrooms with baths and showers. Additional features in the 65 deluxe rooms include a TV with national channels, mini bar and a range of guest amenities.


The main restaurant overlooks the beautiful gardens, and offers a wide choice in both Western and Eastern cuisine. The coffee shop is also on the ground floor, located close to the main restaurant and specialises in serving light meals and snacks.

The Supper Club, with its panoramic bar and lounge and elegantly furnished dining area, serves a-la-carte meals in an intimate and romantic atmosphere.

The Public Bar is probably the most popular meeting place and is located right next to the Billiard Room, which has three Billiard tables of international size and standard.

The third bar at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya is a dispense bar, which serves the Main Restaurant, Coffee Shop and lounge areas.
