Karen Blixen Camp

About Karen Blixen Camp, Mara North

Karen Blixen Camp, set on the banks of the Mara River in the North Conservancy, is named after the well known author, best known for her book “Out of Africa” in which she describes her time living in Kenya.

The Masai Mara is classified among the Seven Wonders of the World due to the unique and unforgettable wildebeest migration. The area is characterised by the beautiful and open savannah, cut through with rivers and small streams providing drinking spots for the abundance of game and the lions, cheetahs and leopards living in the area.

The camp gives a distinct 1920-30’s feel for those wanting a real ‘authentic’ safari experience.

Lodge Details

Style

Luxurious and stylish tented accommodation with a real 'yesteryear' feel, set amongst the beautiful vistas of the Mara River.

Setting

The camp is set on the banks of the Mara River in the Mara North Conservancy, a private conservancy of more than 32,000Ha of undisturbed wildlife. This is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas, so game viewing is never a disappointment – especially due the incredible migration of over 1.5million wildebeest and zebra crossing the river between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara.

Accommodation & Facilities

There are 19 tents set along side the Mara River; the other 3 are on raised platforms offering stunning views of the surroundings. Each tent is en-suite; the bathroom includes twin basins, a flush toilet and an outdoor shower, giving an unforgettable view of the Mara sky in complete privacy. The rooms are furnished with a large comfortable bed, Persian rugs, armchair and mini bar, alongside an undisturbed and unique view of the Mara River and the game often drinking from it.

Dining

All ingredients are locally produced and put to good use using some of Karen Blixen’s own recipes, which themselves were influenced by French, English, Italian and Danish cuisine, capturing the taste of long gone colonial days. There is also Far Eastern, Indian and African traditional cooking served, alongside a variety of the continent's top wines. The restaurant and bush garden both have incredible, close views of the Mara River where you might get some game joining you for a drink. Some breakfasts and lunches are set out in the bush, and for the very adventurous there is the option of a romantic bush dinner under the stars.

Activities

Game drives, Lion watching, nature walks, game walking, balloon safaris and eco-camp walks are on offer. As well as this there is the opportunity to visit the local community where you can see more of the way of life of the local Mara people, experience how they live in the middle of the bush and perhaps visit the local school or a busy market day.

Child Policy

Children of all ages welcome.

Responsible Tourism

Karen Blixen Camp is committed to Responsible tourism and “strongly believe tourism holds the capacity to protect a natural wildlife area”. The camp uses a solar panel system to power the camp, gas burners for heating up water, non-power cold room and a sewage system with zero waste water. If this is something you would like to take a closer look at, you have the opportunity for the maintenance guide to take you for an eco-walk around the camp and explain how everything works.
